I am going to transplant a 5 foot elephant ear into a large black plastic milk crate. Can I safely line it with landscape fabric or will that be toxic to my fish? The pattern is too large for pea gravel...it will fall out, so I need to line it with something. Thanks for any suggestions.....susie:rolleyes:

Won't the mat decay in the water? Will the Koi leave it alone or will they pick at it like they do to most plants?

Lots of people plant their water lilys in coconut fiber mat. I have some in my pond. I think it would work well for you and Koi picking at is not a problem. Landscape fabric probably would be safe but I don't know. I've used fiberglass screen in pond, this would probably work too. You can buy the coco mat in sheets or rolls and cut to fit.

I lined some of my pots with the coco fiber mat. Still fine after a year.

If the weight is extreme... which I think it could be in a full milk crate.... could use excess pond liner with a few small holes in it for water circulation. This will ensure no breaking of other lighter materials....over time?

I've used landscape fabric in my submerged pots for years with no consequence.
