is there a chart that will tell you which types to breed to get what offspring you want?

Um, no.

Stay within breeds or at least within major groupings or you get nothing but junk.

For the backyard breeder, yamabuki ogon is a good breed to work with.

Maybe asagi, and perhaps kohaku.

Stay away from showa and sanke unless you can raise hundreds of thousands of babies. Getting a good one of those is akin to hitting the lotto.

Nothing like raising a group of your own babies. And you know that they say about babies...nobody's baby is ugly!

Wanna Bet;) They're only "all pretty" the first time...
A few years and thousands of accidents later ugly gets a lot easier to fess up to:rolleyes:

Some of the older Japanese koi books have the complete chart in them...check out your local library...if u can't find it let me know.

I have been searching but can't find it. Somewhere someone posted a link for how the breeds were developed and I printed it out. It was by Seishu Kataoka
called the Colored Koi Gene Tree.
