I wanted to show you some pictures of the evolution of our shusui

Our first "good" quality shusui we bought 5 January 2005 at 7" (18cm)
http://home.planet.nl/~fokke002/LingLing050105.jpg

And we put in our inside "pond" of 792 gallons at 75 degrees

http://home.planet.nl/~fokke002/binnenbak.jpg

She was very hungry and soon started growing.
On the end of april her hi was almost fainted cause of the missing sunlight in our garage.

At the end of May the outdoor pond was ready so she finally would get some sunlight. At that time she already was 12.5"

In October we did our winter check and took this picture.
You can see that the hi was returning, but most of the time she was to busy with growing....and was 15.75" already :yahoo:

She stayed outdoors during the long winter. Till end of april the water was still below 50 degrees, but in May the temperature was slowly rising. And last week we were curious about her lenght so we pulled her out. She was 18.5" and her body became even better.

For so far the picture.
As you look well you can find a sumi spot on her left side. When it showed up i was very sad and
But it's not predictable if your shusui will get sumi spots or not.
What more can we see....if you look to the hi you can see that on the places where the "zipper" touches the hi pattern the blue/black color wants to take over the hi.
In Holland most shusui turn totally blue after a few years cause of the hard water we have
In the spring this shusui appeared to become blue on her head but luckily after some changes of the waterhardness it went to almost white again.

We feed them about 500gr each day without the extra's like pasta with honey, salat.
I'm feeding with House of Kata (www.houseofkata.nl) wich is not yet available in the states. But in England and Holland they book many successes. I make my own mix of grower, color and garlic. (note: garlic gives a good bonestructure needed if you let them grow fast) for in my koi feeder and i use the royal mix (with 3 kinds of skrimps) when i feed them by hand.

In my case it was simple by changing a lot of water every 2-3 days.
I use klay as well and i built a separate pond for lots of plants.

Our winters are not so cold. I have heard about Koi losing colour indoors. This is a nice illustration. Thanks for sharing. You have raised the shusui nicely.

Hang a flourescent light, at least 2.5' long, with two 40watt bulbs, 12" to 18" above your indoor tank. It'll help your fish's color while indoors.

I love shusui as well as asagi...was a fun thread to read and beautiful koi! Naturally I have to ask who bred the koi? Do you know who the breeder was?
Shusui was the first douitsu bred color variety to be established. It is typical that they do better in soft water...hard water of GH 200 or more contributes to the darken of the forhead and appearance of sumi spots. I looked for a few years to find a nice one but never could because the "zipper" was always out of alignment or if not it was 3 years old perefct and too expensive!!!!!
Of the three asagi's i have 2 have typical white forhead and the third is a special light blue that the japanese favor. Both maintained in same water. I use Reverse osmosis and hold the KH and GH just over 100. I find carotene is the best suppliment to work with for the color, spirulina doesn't do the job properly. and if you can indulge me for one more comment, while a grow lux or full spectrum bulb in a florescent light is a good interim step to cut down color loss, It's best to have a greenhouse situation that floods in natural light.
That's why the japanese house their koi overwinter in greenhouses because of the importance of the light.....as miss piggy is opt to say..."more is not enough....."

This is a shimi it is usually associate with your water. The hardness and such. That is some growth in your shusui. I thought steroids were illegal;) "We are here to pump you up." No really you have a really nice shusui on you hands. I really like them when i first got into the hobby this was the first fish i bought and i fell in love with it. I still have him and he is 10 years old and probably only slightly larger than yours.

Beautiful fish! I moved my fish to a QT while we are working on my new pond. The QT is out doors but under my deck and only gets direct sunlight late in the afternoon. My pond mutt shusui/armorscale has lost nearly all of her hi.
