We dug the pond out in 1 day.
It was 5 ft in one area but we filled it in with the sides that were shaved off with the jack hammer.

Part 3
We added plastic because it is raining alot here and it is easiest to pump out water from the center where the bottom drain will go.
We had a tarp over the pond and it still managed to get 6 of water inside of the pond.
It is better to contain the water to prevent the bottom from getting saturated.

Part 4.
Forms, rebar and plumbing going in.
We removed the tie downs from plumbing to rebar and installed on separation chairs installed before the pour to separate the rebar 3 from the dirt and plumbing 3 from rebar. We also added 18 more 3 dobies to raise the rebar from the floor and was lifted up manually once the floor was partially set.
Rebar schedule 6 OC for #4 bond beam.
8 OC for #3 surrounding.

Rebar was half way done at this point so we could pull the pvc through the walls and install the 4 midwater intake.

We are the very best shotcrete installers in the USA.
This was 9+yds 5000psi concrete with xypex admixture.

The Pressure was tested over night until we were done with the concrete.
Always good to use two test gauges just In case one is stuck.

Despite the rain we could have had this pond dug and poured in 3-4 days.
Now we maintain moisture in and around the pond, we will wait 1-2 weeks for the concrete to cure then treat with muriatic acid and seal with epoxy.

The corner walls are 11 thick and the middle sections 9 thick.
The floor is 12 thick then tapers to the drain 1/4 per foot.
We are using 5000 psi shotcrete with fiberglass and xypex admix.

Great you are letting the concrete cure also. Some builders skip this step and just waterproof or use paint the next day. Anyone that knows concrete will frown on that.

Why are you using an epoxy to seal the pond when the Xypex is already in the concrete?

We are using epoxy to keep the surface as smooth as possible and a preventative for water marks.

Pond is sealed.
Low voltage LED underwater lights installed (complimentary)
Plumbing/filtration installed.
Potassium permanganate added to start nitrifying cycle.

Out of curiosity, how does PP start the nitrifying cycle?

Out of curiosity, how does PP start the nitrifying cycle?
It is a oxidizer used to prime plastic material
In this case epoxy sealer.
Also gets rid of many heavy metals in water that do not promote bacteria growth in ponds this in-turn starts a healthy cycle of bacteria to grow without fluctuations or (new pond syndrome).
The pond is 3 months in and blanketed with a thin layer of algae on the walls that fish can thrive off.

I bought a house a couple of years ago which came with a five thousand gallon aquascape pond. I got addicted to Koi and now that I know more (thanks to this website and others) I am looking into building a fifteen thousand gallon Koi dedicated pond like this. However, I live in Denver Colorado. Do you construct ponds in other towns like Denver?

I see mechanical filtration with the rdf what is your biological filter set going to be?

There is a aqua ultima bead filter buried in the ground right next to the rdf.

Hi A1Koi, can you share your reason for these mixtures? I understand Xypex Admix(waterproofing) and probably the 5000 psi shotcrete(strength), but is the fiberglass necessary? Like additional bonding and crack resistant? Is this standard for concrete pond? or you're going above and beyond?
Then also, your process to treat with muriatic acid, which I believe is to acid wash the surface in preparation for the epoxy. Is the epoxy basically for a smooth surface? or are there other reasons?
Thanks

We add Fiberglass to minimize concrete related shrinking -cracking specifically for shotcrete.
We dont use fiberglass for monolithic concrete pours.
Xypex is a waterproofing additive used for all of our koi pond installs.
Epoxy is for a very smooth finished surface.
