View Full Version : tosai selections

These should be my current 4 picks from Russ's trip. I think the 3rd one from the left is the most risky selection. For some reason I kept getting drawn back to it, and it was a late pick-up. Waiting is going to be the hardest part, but have some finishing to do on the new pond. I already started the shower on the old pond and am ready for spring and to pull the cover off.

I forgot to mention Russ is throwing in a free Choguro Platinum if you picked 3 tosai. I don't have a snap of them, but my youngest is most excited about that one :bow3:

Anyone else have new picks to share?

Here are a few of mine. I picked a couple of the Omosako Shiros to see which one might turn out best. I have a feeling its gonna be a hard decision for me when the time comes. I also took a chance on a tosai goshiki. We'll see on that one too. It will be a fun ride seeing how they turn out.

I have a shiro from last year's trip from Kobayashi that I tried to pick a light one, this time went for dark from Omosaka. Of your two I like the second, but Russ got a lot of interesting koi to watch.

Yes, i like the 2nd one too. I have a third one that is very similar so we'll see.
I'm liking kby103's asagi. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out in a couple of years.

I am all tosai'd out for the year thanks to Russ. :like: Might have to give some to my nephew this fall. I was slow today on the INC fish as I spent 6 hours trenching and working on plumbing (and had to pick up and install a new dryer in the house ), so missed a higher quality kohaku, but picked up a sanke that seemed longer than the bowl mates.

Kevin, where you get the 50 tosai? I think I better do it one by one, or I'd have to throw them all in our big mud pond...

Hugomizz
02-19-2017, 10:36 PM
haha. I would not show Zulu either. I would not show any high end koi because of what they go through. not my cup of tea lol.

I might have to come to a socal show to meet you and tom. if you come to a NorCal show in summer I can show you a good time here. sorry to highjack the thread.

I will be at NorCal

from a dealer friend. I'm crazy for getting 50 and did loose some. I have it betteready under control now. I can't advertise the dealer really, not a vendor on here and don't want to push his koi.

I would not get 50 tosai again..most the ogon did not fare so well. the gosanke were ok. small nitrite spike. now 38 koi in 300 gallon rubbermaid heatEd to 64 degrees. feeding 3 times a day

I had 11 ogon and now 2. many say koi are koi but platinum and yamabuki have been the hardest to keep . 9 ogon down and lost 3 gosanke out of 39.

I will post video tomorrow

Why do you think you have lost so many? Are the water parameters ok?

sucks how long it takes for russ post to be approved. I should post my new koi on his forum:rolleyes:

Maybe so, your choice.

We do the best we can and the alternative would have been a lot longer between posting and approval. :twocents:

I am trying hard to resist getting more Sakai Ltd tosai. Probably the best looking tosai anywhere. That long body Okawa kohaku looks tempting also.

Nice picks!

i just came in from 10 hours working on the new pond & 8 hours digging trenches and laying pipe yesterday.. I am so beat. One more day and I will be done as far as the fishes are concerned. Of course my best laid plumbing plans were thrown askew by running my lines close together, big valve bodies and such were difficult to work with. I got to be done and running before the tosai come out of QT, I will NOT put my tosai in the old pond, lol.

I'm so jealous looking at all these great fish and tempted to get in on this buying frenzy from PSkoi. I've never bought fish online like this before. Any rough idea how much it would cost to have 3-5 tosai shipped?

I was told $125 airport to airport. If only I lived closer to an airport.

icu2
02-21-2017, 12:32 AM
That's very close to what my costs have been one box airport to airport. You might check and see if there is an additional cost
because it costs Russ to get the fish from Japan to CA too.

Yeah these are the last two for a while for me no more room plus I don't like to pay for shipping.

KurtG
02-21-2017, 07:21 AM
There has been no additional cost from Russ on the tosai (he boxes them too), the larger fish may be different. I only paid the airline fee when I went to pick them up last year. Shipping for 3 tosai was about $100.

Don't know the exact pricing formula for airport-to-airport but the distance doesn't seem matter that much. Oakland to Orange County is only about 1 hour 20 min flight time. It has always been around $100 per box for me.

Thanks. These Sakai Ltd tosai are best looking tosai that I have seen available for purchase. Sure there has always been tosai with glowing skin and fancy patterns available but there is something special about these that screams tategoi. The skin is so thick and transparent. Beni and sumi almost look two years more mature than the actual age. The conformation is strong on most of them with big heads and frames. I can easily pick out two more if ... .

OK, a little help before I bite. In addition to a showa and Yamabuki Ogon, I'm interested in these two from the Kobayashi tosai page:

565109

I understand people look for a lighter color goshiki, but I like the very dark ones..... would this be a mistake to buy? What might this look like in the end?

And then this:

565110

I'm not even sure what type this is other than some sort of doistu. Any thoughts?
