Ok here are some photos of Showa fry a week and one day old! Interestingly the dark fry are all larger that the orange or pale fry? Please feel free to add comments as to why they are larger? The squared paper is 6mm for scale, please excuse pun. The photos are taken with an Iphone held on a piece of wood the correct height with a cheap clip on lens. All taken at the same time at the same distance hence block of wood. Please comment on what you think they are likely to become? So at what size can you see scales and colour rather than just spots? Or when do the spot turn into patches of colour?
This chap is the biggest of the group. Loads of spots. Reminds me of when I was a teenager!!!!!

I will be interest as to what this will be? Any suggestions? Shiro? Very pale with a few dark spots on head?

I thought SU were black until they are an inch or so.. Know what's funny? Today I found 2 fry in the pond that looks darker than yours..same size. Will start a post later on my own .. Don't know if they are koi or goldfish..

Thanks for comment. Looking at them without magnification they look an olive dark green and some are a darker olive green rather that jet black. So I will be interested to see what they become. My understanding is that koi have barbells by their mouths and goldfish don't!

Two week old today fry photos from showa spawn. Size differs considerable already, must be genetic as all fry in a 300 gallon tank but if you have opinion share it !

If you want Showa then cull all of the light colored fry. This will give the dark fry more space and food. Water quality is the key thing and as they grow the harder it is to achieve. Good luck

One spotted one? Sanke? I am assuming yellow to orange therefore yellow fry becoming Kohaku? Please feel free to correct me!

One very pink and clean not yellow? interested in what it will become? Any ideas?
532797
Grey and yellow so I am assuming showa providing the yellow turns red?
532798
Kohaku?

Cheers Delbert, there only in a 300 gallon tank so lots of water changing and filtering etc What interests me is how they change the orange two tone fry is now a grin rin hi utsuri I did not see that one coming! Colours eg red are more orange as the tank is in the garage under two layer of clear plastic sheeting.

I had to read your thread and I have to say I like post no.8 you keep your options open to learn from and I think it was a very wise decision looking at your results, got some nice ones there.

Thanks Sschult. What I have noticed that gin rin does not appear early, or put it another way I can't see it! So for me it is only apparent after a couple of months. Now that they are four months old you can start judge the skin quality and depth of sumi etc but before this it is just a case of getting rid of deformed, bent gill plates broken or twisted backs and slow growing fry.
