I love showas because, to me, they're a total mystery.
So for me, only time will tell... I'll just watch and learn. :D:

I am sure we will see a lot of changes. I just hope the secondary beni at the end of the dorsal either comes in or fades away. I know from experience with a sanke that it can distract. Keep posting and we will find out.

^ It might even get covered up, there's loads of lurking sumi over the whole fish, I think it'll turn out to be a nice classic looking showa, but I don't have much experience raising them either :)

Your getting some pretty good growth, particularly for Washington weather?

icu2
10-05-2013, 08:14 PM
Thanks, hopefully the beni will get a chance over the winter to consolidate and will hold together. Water temp is 55* now and will
probably only go down from here.

One can hope.

Maybe you pushed the growth too much and the beni got stretched beyond its limit. :(

icu2

 Probably... In the Pacific NW we get about 2 months of water temps at or over 70*, so I've fed
a lot during that time.

The high today at coastal southern California was 92. :D: I was holding off feeding until it cooled down a bit. We do have our share of problems due to the fluctuating temperature.

I always wonder if ponders in Pac NW do flow-thru since water is more plenty. If the rain water isn't acidic, one can even re-direct the rain water to the pond.

I'm truly jealous.

I think many do flow through. I don't do rainwater but I am on a well and I rely on auto water changes totaling about 120 gallons a day, fwiw.

Well water? I am so jealous.

I still remember the dirty look I received when I told my friends from Vancouver that I like rain.

awesome about 9 inches to 14 inches give or take. I have one sanke that I got this year that was about 9 inches and now is about 13 inches.

Don't forget to get measurements and enter your grow outs into the Virtual Koi/Goldfish show, see how well your selecting and husbandry stacks against the others in the grow out.

I have a few that ended up the same, I am still learning my self. Looking at the first 2 pictures, I saw white between the scales, I think this was indication the red is no good.

I dont think it has to do with how fast the koi growth.

May I ask what a grow out is and can someone tell me if that is in the mud pond? And do the mud ponds have filtration? Or jussstaeration etcc.

In a nutshell a "grow out" is usually just a group of fish offered by a seller or breeder at a discount to a collection of buyers and
we try and document they're development over time.
It can be a competition where they are judged after a year or so and see who's turns out to be the best... or
sometimes they're judged strictly on growth.

Mine are just in my ponds... not too much mud. :)

Great! Thanks for clearing that up! I thought a grow out was basically throw them in the pond and see how fast ya can grow them in a certainamount of time?! LOL:uggg:

Hi Steve:

Thanks for the up date. Mine are about the same as yours or worse.

Must be a newer shot of the pond? I don't remember the deck over the waste/overflow.

Thanks!

This was a pic from August of last year...
Monte, I think it's changed a little since you came over! :) Sorry your grow outs aren't fairing any better than mine.

I screwed up the lower waterfall so it was trapping too much debris and on start up after the winter, I think it was causing
hydrogen sulfide to be dumped into the pond and I ended up losing my Tancho Sanke :uggg:
So I ripped out the lower waterfall and rebuilt it and now it's about 6" lower than what it was in that pic. I'll have to climb
up on the roof again and take an updated pic.

If I remember right the last, lower pool was about 16"-18".

Probably very quite with the "sheet" entering the water 6" lower.

Careful on the roof. Do it before beers.

Here's a pic of the redone falls... and you're right, much quieter. :thumb:

The flow over the new waterfall is remarkably even . Do you have some kind of underlayment at the edge of the fall ? From the black line on the picture, looks like something is there .....

Thanks!

And yes, it's a strip of epdm... a trick I stole from Bill (wputnam) that he uses on his pond. I started with some
acrylic type plastic (clear), but after a year it would crack as soon as I touched it, so I redid it with the epdm and
even though it's more visible, if it's like the acrylic, you'll barely be able to see it after a couple of months. And it makes
the water very quiet... more like a weir would be.

My honest opinion is this one grew WAY too fast...I dunno, I've been going slow and steady and mine still held onto all the red...maybe he'll lose it this year but

I'm almost honored! :D:
In the Pacific Northwest where the water temps don't often break 70* for more than a few weeks a year, rarely do we have that problem.
But I learned a lot and with these guys and will be looking for stronger beni to begin with next time. Every fish is an adventure.

I was never very good at knowing when to give up. :D:
I have 15 fish in about 7500 gallons so I don't really need the room... I guess they'll just stay in the mutt
pond for now.

Probably a good decision in hindsight. :)

I will say though that the showa turned out to be a faithful companion to Miss Piggy after she was electrocuted. They lived
in the Intex for over a year and that little fish never left her side. Even when I pulled her give her injections, I couldn't keep
him out of the net. Always amazed me. I finally had to put Miss P down as she started to develop ulcers from spending so
much time on the pool bottom and had almost no quality of life left. But he kind of earned a pass after that. The kohaku...
well, not so much. :) But they're both still there.
