What ratio do you use to delute your epson salts when putting on your plants? I am used to doing 2 tbs. per gallon but I am going to use this on Kimberly ferns and it has been a while since I put it on them. These are large ferns and I do not want to burn them.

I used to have very large Boston Ferns in Ohio hanging on my front porch. I used 1 tablespoon per gallon of water.

Thanks Cindy for a great site and info.
Nancy, that is good to know, as these are in pots that are around 10 gallons and the surface area is about 18". The fire bit them back some and we are trying to get them going for a wedding on June 1. I have shown them in other pics in the greenhouse.

I always used Epsom Salt liberally around my vegetable garden and landscape plants. I just walk around and throw a little under or around each plant, then go back and water it in a little. Not very scientific, but never had it burn or damage the plants. Like any fertilizer, you will see the best results when your soil is deficient in the item you are applying.

I always mix in half a gallon of them in with 3 bags of manure when I give my roses their spring feed every year. I do the same for all my clematis vines along with some wood ash in the mixture.

Has anyone used it on waterlilies, lotus or something like water hyacinths? How would you apply it? Will it harm fish?

I'm not sure what benefit they would provide to water lilies or lotus. On roses it's to make the canes stronger. I doubt that they would harm fish, but I really don't know for sure.

Roddy suggests mixing epsom salts and calcium chloride to bring up the GH hardness, since epsom salts is magnesium sulfate and would provide the magnesium faction of hardness. If the plants show signs of magnesium deficiency, it shouldn't hurt a thing.

What would be a sign of magnesium deficiency?
