Doug - I thought Ochiba's come from Chagoi & saragoi - I didn't know that kohaku's could be in on the mix

I believe that was the original recipe, but in an effort to refine the pattern, I think some breeders began tossing in some Kohaku blood

I've seen the kohaku/Chagoi cross Ochibas and they were very nice!

i let the fry growout in a 3000 gallon pond, with tons of live brine shrimp, daphnia and some mayfly nymph for the babies to eat. I also supplement feed with 50% protein very fine powder like pellets. Growth rate is pretty good

sorry to get back to you so late, the 2 litre container was a cranberry juice container from Sams Club. Here are a few more pics of the baby fry are around 5-6 weeks old.

Any thoughts on what they will be looking like at 3-4"? Most look like Chag to my untrained fry eye.

They should get their pattern and color at 2-4"

Neat, so how do they cull them at this size, at commercial breeders, if they don't have patterns until twice as large. I was thinking by 2-4" they would be down to at least 50% of the originial hatch numbers.

im' not really sure how you would cull ochiba at this size. my guess would be light from dark, just like about every other breed.

Doug,

In the last picture, I noticed that one of the Koi fry got tail cut off. It seems that you may have some big fry that are eating the smaller ones.

yes, there a are few very big tobies in there, i'll need to put a basket net in the pond to separate the tobies

That bottom one in the last pic has an armor scale look to it.

one of the male i threw in the spawning combo was a male kohaku doitsu. That one may have the scale from one of the male.

Can't believe your speading this smut around. Although I must say she is pretty hot. Still 4 way fish porn pics! terrible!

The babies look nice though. Should have some nice ochiba.
