View Full Version : Female vs Male ratio

I have 8 koi which are 2-3 yrs old. At this point I am fairly sure that 4 are female based on their appearance at this time. (belly size) I have 2 that are leaning towards the female side but I dont see that distinct belly like the others. I have one that I have no clue & one that I feel pretty confident that its a male.

My questions:

1. Will the females all spawn at the same time if left together?

2. IF I only have one male, will he be able to "handle" all these girls???

3. Will the females belly vary in size? I mean, some have larger bellies than others yet they are the same size fish. Does that mean they will spawn at different times?

It will be like being in high school for your 1 male!
I have had several pond spawns over the course of a summer a few years ago. I don't know who triggered what but there were two males who were active in all three cases. The males seemed to target one or two females each time.

if your breeding, I would do 2 males, and 1 female. If spawning in your pond, I think they will sort it out.
