Ok Matt...
Tell us why Sakai stock is the best for breeding?..
I hear you have a Koi from Sakai that he rents to you, will not sell it to you. What is so special about this koi?
Do you Matt pick out the parent sets each year? Are you mixing it up? Example showa x sanke
kohaku x sanke
Matt, you have seen so many koi your eye is trained so well by now that I am sure you can pick out a tategoi among many. Can you share with us that knowledge, what do you see first body, skin quality, pattern, how does the head shape suppose to be,ect?
If you don't know the bloodline, does it make it more difficult to choose tategoi?
Can you explain fukurin, pearl gin, gin fleck?
Do you get new parent stock each year for spawning?
When are you guys coming out with a full length video (like Momotaro dvd) about your farm, spawning, raising fry, what to do and what not to do growing koi America style?
Do you add to your your mud ponds each year with more calicum bentonite?
Do you lime your mud ponds each year?
For me timing is critical for fry into the mud ponds before the frogs lay their eggs , tadepoles, dragonflys, ect. Do you have this problem in New Jersey early in the season, mine starts in March?
For a more control area, have you done concrete mud ponds yet like Momotaro has done?
Can you please explain why it is so important to OT any new koi?
Do you do khv seroloy test on each parent stock brought in? What about your selling koi stock, how do you handle and test for that?
will you be coming out with your own koi food like Blackwater creek did? If not what do you use and why?
How about your farm offering a contest for one person to win a all expense paid trip to your farm with Toshio Sakai as the host for the day ( one on one with the master teaching koi) when he visit you?:yahoo:
More questions to ask later, got to feed the koi.. Look forward to seeing you at Orlando show.
How do you get goshiki? asagi x kohaku makes ai goromo. Do you have to cross back ai goromo to kohaku to get goshiki?
do you induce spawning or do natural spawning?
Have you use Omosaka shiro utsuri stock for your breeding progam?
Have you use any of Sakai of Hiroshima stock for your breeding program?
The Japanese mud ponds use the snow that melts into their ponds for water in the mountains so I assume it also means they cannot add more water to the ponds during the summer to cool water temp. With that the temps will rise to upper 80, maybe low 90. Do you add water to your mud ponds during summer for temp, evaporation, new water? Have you try a flow thru mud pond? I have 2 like that and from fry in march to October chagoi, soragoi grew 14-16 inches.
Do mud ponds different for depth for tosai, nidan and on? Why?
How many times do you cull a mud pond. When do you start culling for kohaku, showa, sanke?
I know with showa first culling you only keep the black koi. What do you look for in the next culling of showa?
How can you tell good skin quality compare to bad? How do you know deep beni, sumi on a koi?
more questions soon.:eek1:
I have heard that you train under Toshio Sakai for a while. Can you tell us what it was like to work with a true koikichi? Of all his teaching to you what stands out the most?
Can you enlighten us about Sakai"s new sumi he has been working on for the last 20 years and now stable after 4 years? Heard when Peter Russell ask Sakai about it he just smile with a big grin. What is so special about it?
whats your favorite duty on the farm?
what is your water sourse for the farm? Is your water hard and do you see shimis?
Are there some bloodlines to stay away from if you have hard water?
What bloodline is Matnosuke, sorry spell wrong? Is it a mix bloodline Tomine, Manzo?
Have you been back to Japan in a while? Any regrets? Would you do it all over again?

matt,
Sundan wants to apprentice at your farm for a couple of years.
Now let's see from a hobbyist's perspective what questions do i have?????????
Are you gonna breed long fins? (ROFL).unless you are!
Well then are you breeding any serious eye candy that isn't Gosanke like? And why or why not?
What are your largest breeders (both male and female)?
Do koi have personalities?
What is the largest koi you have seen in person?
how far is japan in front of the USA when it comes to producing the elite koi?
What are the advantages and disadvantages between the two nations' breeders concerning resources outside of their immediate control?
The "cool" Summer in New jersey added more girth than warmer Summers have. Have you confirmed that cool Summers increase the girth of koi from any other source?
Could you show us some pics of the oyagoi you are using to establish the Atarashi Sumi? and the Number 1-5 tosai from the Atarashi line? And why you have such high hopes with them?

Matt, new questions added to early post.. what will you bring to orlando show? any of the new sakai sumi?
I know with showa first culling you only keep the black koi. What do you look for in the next culling of showa?
How can you tell good skin quality compare to bad? How do you know deep beni, sumi on a koi?
I second the questions on culling... Also:
What to look for in culling kohaku? Others?
For those of us that are just hobbyist's and would like to dabble in raising our
own koi, what do you suggest as the minimum in equipment? Any must haves
for the backyard breeder?
Thanks for this great opportunity Matt!
