Quarantine tank 20 degrees warmer than pond ?

      Hi,

We have a question about the best way to bring a koi from the pond and into a quarantine tank with a 20 degree difference in temp. ( The quarantine tank is warmer ) How long should we give the koi to make that big of change ? Will 24 hours work or should it be longer ? Any input is appreciated.

      Thanks

With your setup would it be possible to slowly add water from the pond to your pond to your QT setup to lower the temp of the QT OR could you use tap water to do the same thing?

We already have a fish in the heated quarantine so we need to keep that temp consistent

I just moved 2 koi into my QT, coming from a pond that was around 15 degrees cooler. I put them in a bag with the cooler water in and left it to float for 45 mins on top of the tank’s water, then emptied the bag into a blue bowl with some water from the tank added and mixed the cooler water from the bag into it with the fish. Left them for 20 mins then put them into the tank. Temp difference was 5 degrees by the time I did this. I’ll also add it’s less of a shock going from cooler to warmer than the other way around.

I put them in Rubbermaid tubs with aeration and a cover and let the temp come up slowly.

Thanks....how rapidly do you suggest for a 20 degree difference?

No you don't, just lower the temperature in the QT 3 degrees every day until you are 7 or 8 degrees warmer than the pond and then add the pond fish. This does not have to be a difficult process.

If you don't want to do that you can just float them in a bag of pond water and let them go without changing the temperature as it is always easier for the Koi when the temperature rises. Having said that there are no guarantees either way with a 20 degree change.

people like to vehemently defend their purchases and find it incredulous that anything could be better

Since they are coming up to room temp, I am not in control of how rapidly it occurs.

Russ has handled more fish than I probably have ever even seen in a lifetime so his advice is good.
