I am no expert, in fact, my purchases usually involve a chat with folks who know a lot more than I do. But here are my opinions. The pics look saturated and its hard to tell depth, but taking what i can see at face value the first fish has better skin, luster, and depth. I also like the pattern on this one. Its a "big fish pattern". The shiroji looks very nice as well, definitely my favorite of the two. The only negative is that the head comes to a sharp point and there is a drastic curvature from where the gill plate ends and the eye begins. this could look a little wonky as the fish fills out. It has a nice straight body line as well but it does look short.

The second fish has a nicer face shape and is nice and long. These two fish have very different bodies and you will see this more as they fill out.

As for the sex, i actually think it is getting progressively harder to sex tosai as the breeders are really trying to improve the bodies of the males. For example, the second fish which i "think" is a male has a female looking body but male looking pec fins. Fish #1, i say female... the body could go either way but to me the pecs look more transparent and smaller overall. There really isnt a good way to know the sex until they mature.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply. You sound like an expert to me. These are the most expensive I ever paid so will eagerly be watching to see how they improve. The breeder is Hoshikin. I'll upload more pics in 6 months or so and ask for everyone's opinion again. Hope they grow fast with SAKI food.

Now you just gave me some hints.
You will find Hoshikin kohaku very fun for the growout process. Both appear to have nice pattern and good skin. I like the first one with the big tail tube, there is some fuzzy pinkish near the tail area but hopefully it go away.Congrats on the new addition and thanks for sharing.
      Ps Saki is the best

I don't think you can do much better than those two, I think they look very promising to grow on.

Explanation, The size and depth of your pockets?

      Garfield.

Thanks everyone for your inputs. Got me excited! I'll take good care of them and will do 20% WC regularly.

OCKoifan, are you from Orange County?

      Here's my 2 cents:
-The first one may end up with a better conformation in the long run since the second seems to taper more toward the tail tube
-pattern on first is better. Ideally no hi on the odome which is an issue for the second. I think on the second as it grows from sides up youll see somewhat less coverage of hi on its back
      -beni on second looks better/thicker
