      Clove Oil

I went into our natural food store to get some clove oil. I got a brand called Quantum Herbal Products. I got Super-oxygenated Cloves (syzygium Aroma Ticun) contains organic whole cloves in a base of super-oxygenated distilled water and organic grain alcohol. I added 10 drops per gallon. I shook the ten drops in coke bottle with 1/8th of water until my arms and hands hurt. Added the koi to the mixture and he/she laughed at me! I wait for half an hour but nothign happened, and decided to dip it with TN instead of doing the paste with denture powder, but I am planning to do the paste two days from now. Can you tell me if I got the wrong clove oil? I know ppl here also use MS-222 (I think that is the name). I used clove oil since I need to treat my koi's ulcers ASAP and I had success using it in the past, but the store no longer has the brand I used last and don't remember the brand.

      Thanks for reading and advices...

Syzygium species is not clove. That was your problem, you got waylaid by the "super duper extra good" syndrome, and didn't notice the "*contains* clove oil" snake talk. Syzygium is that pathetic plant that tries to be a hedge and always gets mildew and dies, at least in our area,, used to be called eugenia. You need "clove oil" or "clove bud oil".

my wife works for a dentist so I have unlimited supply under the name eugenol. I prefer
      222. What i have found over the years is that thru indiscriminate use of antibiotics, many times these days we have to use a cocktail of sorts for injections and the more you need to put the koi down in sucessive days the longer it takes to put down as they seem to build up a resistance to Oil of Cloves. I found that it takes as long to bring them out as it does to put them down, and after several days of use, I start to build anxiety when they don't come back quickly. So for ease of stress on myself and my koi, I go a different route.....

I too quit using Clove oil a few years ago and use only MS222 or Eugenol (same thing_. I find the fish go down quicker and recover much quicker with no apparent side effects.

thanks Mike, I remember not too long ago a rumor was spreading that exposure over seasons with 222 would have a cumulative effect and you'd lose em. I never found that to be true. The coming back out is important to me....

I thought Eugenol was the active ingredient in Clove Oil?

I've have only obtained my Clove Oil from Koi or fish sources...One of my friends got 'clove oil' from the health food store to use when I went over to help. The fish just weren't acting normal with it so we dumped that and used mine. Soooo much better.

While on the topic of Anaesthetics, another product that I've used and really like is Kusuri Masuzai Anaesthetic. Most Koi go out in less than a minute and recover just as fast. I got some with the Kusuri Wound Kit but you can buy it separately.

I do believe what Kasuri bottles is MS222 but call it by their own name. I've used it in the past and seems to work EXACTLY the same, quick out, quick back.

I'm not aware that Eugenol is the active ingredient in Clove Oil, but I don't believe it is. The reaction times of the fish are much different when comparing both.

Dito what Mike and Dick said. I switched about 6 or 8 months back when I ran low on clove oil. I really like the quick clean recovery much better than the slow groggy hangover from clove oil.

I'm just glad I get to help my friends with their fish, I seemed to have made it through spawning without a major hitch this year.

Did some research with results below. Notice the range of active ingredients in clove oil... which is why results vary depending on the source of extract and the brand of oil that you buy. If using oil from the buds, you could nearly double the dose to get the same results from brand to brand.

      Finquel is Tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222)
Masuizai Koi Sedate is a sedation formulation based on 2-phenoxyethanol.

      Clove oils:
From Buds is 60% to 90% eugenol
From Leaf is 82% to 88% eugenol
From Stems is 90% to 95% eugenol

Thanks for that research/info Steve. I am surprised about the clove oil and the wide range of % from each.

Yes, I was surprised also. The wide variation is probably because it is a health food/herbal supplement and not regulated as a pharmaceutical or food.

Clove oil from stems look good on the surface, but the "other" 5% may be other oils and compounds from the stem. The ones labeled "pure" are usually from the bud extracts.

      Clove Oil

Just finished second treatment...Thank everyone for the info. I noticed the GNC Clove Oil doesn't knock out the fish completely! I did 10 drops per gallon. The koi tip over within a minute and I left it in there for another 30 seconds before taking it out. Once it is out of the water for 10 seconds, the fish started trashing! Previously, the 30 is enough for me to completely knock the koi out and do my things. I have to work very fast and the recovery was very quick since I didn't knock them out completely.

It was pouring and I went out without any rain gears and my neighbors must think I am nuts! Oh well, it not the first time they see me with flood light at night next to my pond...hehehe....

Oh, what kind of denture power you guys used? I got a gel form I thought it was powder...must go back to CVS to get the powder.
