      Need some help.

Hi everyone. I put a new pond in. It is 1000 gallons. I have a 5 gallon UV biofilter running. It has been going for about 3 weeks. Its starting to establish and has a nice green Capet on the liner. I left the UV off for the 3 weeks. I have some large rock submerged in the pond along the wall. There are 10 koi all about 4 inches. They started flashing yesterday. Being a noon I freaked out and did a water change of 300 gallons without doing a water test. It helped until this evening. They have started it again.
      Water temp is 75.2
Please let me know what other info you need.
Attached is a photo of the only tests I can perform. I have a nitrate test coming and a harshness test coming.Name: 15311808818003344275755746262176.jpg

I'm not sure a 5 gallon biofilter will be enough for 1000 gallon pond with 10 koi, even though they're small.
As the fish grow it's bound to get worse.
But if it were me I'd get some Safe or Prime to combat the ammonia levels and nitrite, and I'd be sure to have
pure salt on hand if needed to prevent brown blood disease caused by those elevated nitrite levels. Also check
the pH level in the late afternoon, early evening and compare it with the morning measurement. You want to see
      a less than .5 swing.

Since that UV has been off you might want to check the crystal tube to make certain it's clean on the outside and hasn't accumulated algae. I had a 170 gallon pond preformed and I built a 40-gallon sand and gravel filter with a 25 watt UV after it and it kept that pond crystal clear you can never filter too much

The wide range pH test is of little use except to tell you whether you need the regular pH test or the high range pH. It is just too far between values to reasonably read a value. The high range pH test kit will read much closer over a smaller range. https://www.google.com/search?q=api+...nt=firefox-b-1 Looking at the picture, I would guess the pH is between 7 and 7.5, but for most of us, the pH is going to be much closer to 8.3, when stable. The KH carbonate hardness test (https://www.google.com/search?q=api+...nt=firefox-b-1) will give information about the stability of the pH, with values desired to be well over 100 with 150 or 200 being good values, If it is less than 80ppm (5 drops) then the pH is probably swinging too much morning to evening.

It would also appear that the nitrite reading is about 0.25 and I don't know if it is rising or falling, but the addition of about 10 pounds of solar salt (found in water softener section of hardware stores) will protect the fish from brown blood disease throughout the balance of the cycle. If water is changed, add about 1 pound per hundred gallons of water added.

thank you for the information. The max flow on the filter is 3200 gph. I have a 2100 gph pump on it. I thought this would be sufficient. But I guess I'm wrong?? Also those readings were early evening. I do have salt. Should I add it now to be proactive? I will do a water change tomorrow. Anymore info is welcomed.

I would. Rich gave you basic amounts that should be added and here's a calculator that might help too to get the
      specific amount you need:

The one Wmurky mentioned is a great one:

      https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showth...-Gravel-Filter

I found a laundry bag of K1 in the top of it will increase the bio capability too.

Birdman's diy sand and gravel filter and you tube videos I wish I had thought of taking pictures as I built it I borrowed ideas that I thought were good and put them together and I think I improved on some filters and came up with my 40 gallon barrel version people talk about using egg crate from light fixtures don't use it, dog kennel gratei flooring very tough will last a lifetime, 3/4 inch squares. If you want more information go ahead and private message me, easier to say it then to text it out.

just want to clear up something for my own worry. I lined the walls with rocks. And built the water fall from them. Is there chances the rock are putting something in the water the fish don't like?Name: 15312233525438626190028402421643.jpg

As Rich said...you are getting ballpark pH. You need a high range pH test.

Your pond is not cycled. It likely will not be for another month.

You can either get Prime or Safe to bind ammonia and protect from nitrites (dosed for the full pond volume every 48 hours) or you can use another ammonia binder (amquel, etc) and use the salt to bind the nitrites.

Your issue is not the rocks...it's that your pond is not cycled and you have ammonia, incoming nitrites and likely issues w/ swinging pH.

You need a High Range pH test, a KH test kit, Prime/Safe or another binder + salt.

I looked for Prime safe and could not find it. Can someone link the amazon for it?

I am not on the browser that allows me to pull up shopping sites but they are two separate products. They are both made by seachem. One is called prime and it is a liquid version… The powdered version is called safe and although it cost more on the front end, it is extremely economical because you just use a tiny amount.
