      Carp pox?

Two of my Tosai are showing signs of what looks like carp pox to me, not 100% sure, soany comments appreciated...it’s gotten bigger on the little chagoi over the past two weeks.

Water temperature is consistent 24 hours a day at approx. 77 f as it’s heated. I did had an Ammonia / Nitrite spike two weeks ago.

Looking at it, it appears to be Flexibacter Columnaris, a bacteria that grows as haystack making it look like fungus. It is readily treated with oxolinic acid.

Thanks, are there any other treatments for it, as oxolinic acid seems difficult to obtain in the UK.

I think that because it is bacteria, it is susceptible to antibiotics, so if you can get an aquarium type antibiotic to use in a QT type situation that should work.

What works really well is remove the Koi and sedate it. Scrape some of it off and coat the area with table salt. Let it sit a few minutes with the salt on it and then return it to the pond.

Just out of curiosity (and always to learn more!!), why would you think it was bacterial that over carp pox? I don't see anything unique or fuzzy, but I've never seen columnaris, either. Even on my iPad, it almost looks waxy.

      Thanks for any info

There's been a LOT of feedback about whether koi can actually even get carp pox or Lymphocystis. I agree with you, but if Russ's suggestion works, that would all that would matter to me.

Appreciate the help, but it’s not Columnaris, it is waxy and seems to be receding. It’s difficult to diagnose from an image.

Okay, but neither Russ nor I said it was Columnaris. I don't think it is.

One of the posters above was kind enough to try and help and as I said it was appreciated, the nature of posting onto a forum with images is never going to be exact enough to help with certainty.

Your reply seems to be antagonistic and I’m not sure why.

Wondering if the ammonia/nitrite spike caused an irritation.

My opinion is koi can get carp pox.

It its receding, hoping its and irritation and healing. Without being there and getting a sample, just a guess from here.

I'm wondering, do you have a microscope so you could look at a little piece to rule out Columnaris. None of us are vets

I did treat with a mild dip of PP, I had an experienced koi keeper advise. It seems to be getting better, hopefully it will continue.

The times and pictures that I have seen of columnaris, it is brighter and more dense than SAP, which tends to accumulate pieces of algae giving it a green cast. I was guessing based on color and texture. I believe that the treatment using salt would be the treatment that would have been used by Brady Brandwood, who was the owner of Lotus Land Koi Farm, and publisher of the Koi Fixx DVD magazine. I have seen pros and cons of salt being used directly on the fish, so did not mention that treatment initially.

The Ochiba in the images above is getting better, the white spots have almost gone, well one side has gone and the other has reduced by 50%, the other chagoi is only 20-30% better.

However the small koi in the top right of the 2nd image is now showing a large white patch on its head that looks like the colour has changed from red, it’s not waxy or protruding and is different to the other koi. He is the smallest fish in the pond and is a bit of a nervous eater, tends to stay under the other fish and seems to only eat when he’s very hungry.

So why miss out Rich Toy Box, who did say he thought it was Columnaris?
