      What's This?

It's a butterfly koi from Petsmart. I don't expect much from it. Some Q's:
      1.Is it a M or F?
2.Can Butterfly Koi and koi breed?
      3. Can koi and goldfish breed?
      4. What variety? Probably a mutt, just asking cuz I don't really know
      Thanks
Oh Ya btw here's the picture

It's a butterfly/long fin Kujaku. Yes, as long fin are a mixed breed based on original genetics, they still breed with standard koi. I really have never seen a koi/goldfish cross although others claim they have had a mixed spawn. Yes, it's a mutt and I don't recommend you buy any more from the large pet chain stores. They most always come with a lot of health issues.

That is a very small koi and the pic isn't the best for much evaluation.

1)way too young and small to guess. It can take getting a koi to 12-16" to begin to have any certainty. Sometimes even longer.
      2) yes
      3) yes but they are mules
      4) I'm guessing Heisei Nishikigoi but the pics aren't clear enough to be sure

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

Shinnie says you are right, Heisei Nishiki is correct.

This beauty was spawned in my pond many years ago. I was told it was a goldfish/koi cross.

Looks like a longfin to me. I like the color and long fins. Can't see the barbels but assume it has them.

I think someone "assumed" that a koi with long flowing fins would have some goldfish genes, but this to me, looks like a long fin Kin Kabuto, but of quite dark quality for the variety. None the less, a pretty and stealth looking fish!

koi/goldfish crosses mostly have only the front barbels pair and lack the second rear pair
at least most of my mixed fish have only the front barbel pair
the fish tend to be mush shorter but tall and wide body with a goldfish shaped rear taper
my oldest cross is as fat a head+body as a 3ft koi but only 1 ft long

I have read that not all crosses are mules
as some will produce depending of their sex and the parents sex/type
but only a few about 1/4 of the fish are not mules
