Most uv bulbs are rated at about 9000 hrs. The uv output starts out high and gradually decreases over time. A UV manufacturer with integrity will list their rating at somewhere around the half way point so when you first turn it on it is the most powerful but actually more than the listed rating and toward the 9000 hours its to a point where it needs to be changed. If your light is more than a year old but still lights up that doesn't mean it's doing you any good.

yep 9,000 hrs...doesn't mean they 'quit' working, but they're operating under optimal capacity... They should be changed every spring with general maintenance

ya going to get a wide spread of answers of 6 months to a year.

some folks only run them as needed and when needed meaning they may only run for a 2 to 3 months of the year to help clean up some green floating algae.

while others might run them non stop from early spring to very end of fall. some folks live in warmer climates which may mean 2 months of the year they might not run there UV. while others in cold climates this might mean 8 months or so of the year. overall running the UV could be part of how much shade the pond gets per day. to another part of how good of a filteration system is on the pond.

      9000 / 24 hours in a day = 375 days

and to just ditto kents comments again. just because it lights up. doesn't mean the UV bulb itself is good.

there are different ballasts and bulb types used that are out there. some do have a little longer lasting time than others. or rather do not decrease as quickly. but keeping track of what is what is one thing i have never done.

I have several brands, but my favorite seems to work at least 3 years and it stays on all year. It is on my 5000 gallon pond and is a fishmate filter (I use it for the uv light). The bulbs set above the water and stay dry.
