      Do painted turtles eat koi?

I've got a 9" painted turtle who has set up shop in one of my mud ponds which I am growing out some 3 to 6" young koi. I don't mind his company as long as he's only looking for koi food. Any one know whether he would bother this size of fish ?

Any help would be great !

      Andrew

In a large mud pond the koi will probably be okay.
I've had an eastern painted turtle with goldfish in 180 gallon tank for 2 years with no problems.

Small fish tanks tend to create conflict with turtles and fish.
From my understanding, fish are a very small part of their diet in the wild but their are exceptions.
Painted turtles when young prefer meat but once adults prefer plants

My turtles (three red eared sliders) will eat small goldfish. Feeder size, once they get about 3 inches, they live them alone. Mine like worms, koi food, and will eat dead fish.
I have never had one go after a bigger fish. That I know of. I have not missed any fish, and I haven't seen any wounds.

Yes, most water turtles aren't that aggressive,... and also aren't that fast compared to fish. They may get few, but it won't be many,... if any, that are 2" or larger. Most water turtles are a lot of fun actually,... they tame easily, and would rather float around and eat Koi food off the surface, than try to catch fast moving fish. The only water turtles I remove here are Snappers.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm, Brady, did that second pic lead to some delish stew? Love that photo, looks like all the little ones are swimming away from the monster!

Brings back memories, that one! Used to scuba dive for golf balls, and would frequently lay my hand down on a large rock, which then proceeded to swim slowly away! Luckily, never got bitten!

Hey Steve, that sounds like great fun! I had a friend when I was a kid who used to go golf ball diving with his dad at the local golf course. They would sneak in at night and feel around for them. A big snapper could definitely do some damage if it decided to. I've only seen them get aggressive when they're caught or cornered.

      Best Wishes,
      Brady

Never tried to turn on me in the water (of course, you could never see them in murky pond water), but on land, that is another story!

I cannot imagine diving at night like your friends, that took some cajones!!! We did it legit, we got a nickel a ball from the club (at least it paid for the air!), and all the free time on the driving range we wanted (that is where the balls went)!!!

Hubby and friends used to go frog gigging at night and the way they could tell the frogs from the Moccasins were the color of the eyes. If the eyes coming toward them were red they would just take the gig and flip them and they would go the other way. I don't think he would be that brave anymore though.

I have a 'rescue' Comet that has no tail due to a turtle invading the little preform pond he was in. He was the only fish left... but I have no way of knowing how big he was when the injury occured. The puddle belonged to a relative of an ex-in-law(LOL), and was ignored through a winter. No pump running, lots of leaves and sludge. The owner decided it was too much trouble and was having the yard guy remove it when the lone fish and the turtle were found. The owner stated that there had been a dozen goldfish placed in the pond the previous spring, and that at least 8 were still alive when it got cool and she stopped feeding/paying attention to them.

'Finnegan' gets along fine without his tail... but I'm still amazed he lived and actually healed in the nasty mess that was his 'pond'.

Looks like the turtle gets to stay. It sure loves koi food. I kicked it out of my first mud pond and it went straight for the second pond. Hope it likes it in there because as of tomorrow the pond will be covered in chicken wire.

Now I'm going to have to name it. Thanks for the replies everyone.

Painted turtles diet is aquatic plants, insects, crayfish, small molluscs, snaiiiils. By and large the stuff the fish don't mop up

Fish are way more nimble than a clumpy turtle, the turtle is far more likely to have the food pinched from his mouth by the fish and a quite pathetic look of dissapointment

Scavenging fish pellets would be quite a treat, if only the dang fish did not pinch them all

Painted turtles are pretty docile and would probably have a lot of trouble catching young koi which are very fast. The only concern is that if you put chicken wire over the top is there a place for the turtle to get out and bask? They can't stay in the water 24/7. They need to get out and bask as often as they want.
