Does a Blue Heron decoy keep Blue Herons away?

Hi everyone...new to the forum and would like some help with a Blue Heron . I have a 16' x 10' x 2' liner pond with a 20' stream. A heron got 6 of my Koi before I figured out was happening. The pond is netted now, but was told that a decoy would keep this HUGE bird away....Thanks

Nope it doesn't. I have had it and even moved it around like they said and still did not work. String around the pond works the best.

does not work! net the pond well above the water. netting the pond slightly above the water still will allow the heron access to the koi. I have had heron set on the net supports that cross the pond holding the net a few inches from the water. With their long beak they can still poke at the koi but will not be able to get the koi out from under the net.

The Blue Heron decoy does not work.
Floating Alligators do not work either.

So far this spring I have been using Metallic pinwheels close to my pond.
They are shinny silver and blue. They are my GD 's toys.
Heron don't like movement or anything shinny....so I thought I would try them. This is the first spring in 7 years that I haven't lost any fish.

Dogs work as long as they have some size to them. You can also try stringing heavy test fishing line around the pond like two feet off the ground. Also if they just up and fall over dead cause a darned high speed piece of metal just happened to hit them it's not a bad thing either. Just be sure that in the event of a random act of fateful smiting nobody witnesses the happening.

I used to have to net my pond for two weeks after a heron visit. Then it would usually take up to a year before another visit that I knew of. Then I'd net the pond again for two or so weeks, then take it off. What a hassle!

I got a heron decoy and haven't netted the pond for 3-4years - could be coincidence, or overhanging tree growth, or dog has become more alert (although its inside until 7am on weekdays, 9-10am fri-sat-sun), or something else. I'm NOT taking the decoy down, though.

Some Herons are either smarter than others, or hungrier, stupider or just plain more determined. But my Heron makes regular visits to my pond even though it is netted almost 24/7/365. He still window shops and drools very regularly. But this is the same Heron or one of it's relatives that I watched walk through a double strand of electric fence around my yard. He stepped over the bottom strand and ducked his head under the top strand and didn't even miss a beat. When he is at the pond, he will walk around the other side when we walk up and when we walk around that side he just goes on around to the other side. Only flies away when we really threaten him and make a loud noise.

See now I guess its all in what heron you are talking about, I got a plastic heron and a floating alligator and they worked for me.
but then I move my heron around all the time. My neighbor has one and she says hers doesn't work either.
I use pinwheels, flasher tape and windchimes to keep the peafowl out of my garden.
My pond is between my house and garden so maybe it is just all too much for the GBH.

pie tins are keeping squirrels out of my japanese maple (they were tearing the bark off of it).

I wonder if pie tins waving in the wind would do it?

I think a dead one, after you blow it away with a shotgun would do the trick... Gary

That works too, but then you have to have a bobcat that will eat it, just to make it legal

I was told a floating gazing ball works. The silver kind. I never tried and not sure if it works or not but they are cheap enough if you wanted to give it a try.

The wife came home one night a couple weeks ago and saw the heron in the field behind the pond, so I chased it away and got out the fake one. Thought that would do it the next night I moved it went to the kitchen a little later and saw the heron standing in the pond about five feet away from the fake one. Went out and got the net. Heard they don't work during mating season which I think we were in at the time.
