Here's my 5 gallon pond. It doesn't have a filter. LOL

Oh 4-6 thousand. I love my Savio. Easy to clean and easy to change the UV light.

I would think some bead type of system that does it all. Divide the manufacturers suggested pond size by 2. Of course this isn't the best way but the answer applys to your imagininary situation quite nicely!

Also the terms best and low maintenace are mutually exclusive! The best requires maintenance.

If the price weren't so stupid right now, I'd go with a bakki shower filter. I also agree with K-Meister, cut the pond volume capacity on a filter by 1/2. The other thing is that it's not about filtration; it's about water quality and water management. You can't just think of 'what filter' will work the best. It has to be HOW will I get the water the best quality possible? Big stuff, little stuff, chemical, biological, bad fish critters, etc. More of a sequenced process with measurable end results.

You remember in the old days how you collected so many of those special stamps, you could turn those in for items. Well, thats how i'm handling my CD sales money, so If I sold like 10,000 CD's I might buy a Nexus with an Answer and some Kaldes. Since I'm not that rich, I guess I'll have to settle for the DIY stuff. Did I mention buy a CD !! All the money earned goes to the "greg bickal pond improvement fund"

Of course it would all depend.....

On a wide range of circumstances. Gravity feed is better than pump fed for solids seperation. Gravity fed requires special placement considerations (water seeking its own level and all). For "footprint"/effectiveness/total costs, its hard to beat a Nexus. About the same cost as a large bead filter (w/o answer), as effective as a 3 chamber system and with the much smaller footprint saves on additional construction costs.

Its versatile enough to use pump fed as well and an Answer can easily be added at a later date. Iv'e tried most forms of filtration...sand filters, Lava Rock upflow, multi chamber systems, TTs, beads, and the list goes on. I haven't found anything to date which compares...especially when EVERYTHING is considered.

Just one thing to remember...you have to design a "system", not just the filter....it needs to match up to piping, pumps, turnover rates, planned stocking densities, etc. etc. etc

Very well said Steve. I am not stalking you, only going to where the action is. I wasn't talking best, but good with little maintenance and simple. The nexus with answer (which I also have in my filtration arsenal) is good, but I feel the Bead filter (I have an aquadyne 8.8c seems to me would do a better job on mechanical filtration, especially the fines, with a bit less maintenance.

I am not contesting the gravity fed thing for solids, but talking about a simple 1 device thing that works best for a 4-6000 gal pond.

Well since I am at it, my sand filters are my absolute favorites for mechanical only. I wouldn't want to pop a couple of viagra and stand too close to my sand filters. But this is not for the average ponder maybe, works for me.

      Purpose for each Stephen

Bead filters work great on "the fines" The problem is to get all the "non fines" removed so that a bead filter isn't "trapping the crap". When used AFTER a chamber system/pump, or Nexus/pump, a bead filter can be a good addition. They also work well on skimmer systems, especially if the skimmers gravity feed to another form of seperation system (vortex w/ or w/o answer), then pump, then bead.

Bead as stand alones just don't cut it in the long run for a Koi pond and become way to maintenance intensive.

I respect your opinion! However; if one is using a nexus with answer as their only filtration device, nothing else, the answer screen will need constant hosing off as will the blue foam that the water passes thru before being returned to pond.

what about using bead filter for mech filtering only and then a TT or a DIY bakki for bio filter. Never could wrap my head around using a bead filter for bio. If such is the case, do you still need to divide the mfr recommended pond size by 2?

      Good question Christine

OK, so at least I have some thinking I think we are moving away from a bead filter for biological filtration....Good. Now, what about mechanical filtration? The problem here is that the "crap" is being trapped inside with the pond water being pushed through the crap...how shall I describe that.....ahhhhhhh........YUCK! The idea is to seperate out the solids or as much as possible, before a bead filter and use it to trap only the smallest "fines". In this fashion, you not only avoid the inevitable daily (sometimes multiple) backflushes and provide for a much improved quality of water passing through.

      Make sense?
