Nancy I was shocked at how big the roots were. I posted earlier how I redid the veggie filter and had ripped them out and in the process they lost alot of their roots and had to reestablish themselves. That was towards the end or middle of August. Over the winter I am going to come up with some kind of drain/flush system for the veggie filter so I don't have to rip everything out to clean. Would like to add a perrrerial like rush or mini cattail for some height in the middle with the impatiens on the edges. Here's to late April, it can't get here soon enough.

Fortunately my impatiens are still doing well - we didn't have the issues that many have had with mildew on them. I know that next week will probably take care of them, though, because it's suppose to get cold. At least one more week of color out there!

The blooms aren't as many or full as they were a month ago, but some are still there. Many of the water plants such as the pickerel rush have died back already.

Mine are still going strong too right now I am so busy trying to get the rest of the back porch converted into a sun room of sorts. Just plastic and 2x4's nothing fancy.

Rita are you talking about impatiens? I am sure they would but would probably get spider mites. Most of what will be on the back porch will be Taro and Banana plants and of course my lime and lemon trees. I will be taking a few pots of Dragon wing begonias in a well for color.

I'm sorry, when I read this, I thought you meant you were going to put the impatients in there. You have sooo many plants and a wonderful green thumb, love your pics!

Looks like it is getting close for a few of us to start planting Impatiens in our ponds & streams.

Here is more info on the Impatiens Downy Mildew Disease. Also a pic & info on what to watch for when buying your plants.
Hope no one gets this disease with their plants this year. Once a plant is infected, it cannot be cured.

I plan to use Sunpatiens instead & not even try Impatiens this year. I hate to watch big beautiful plants die.
I have two Sunpatiens that I over wintered inside that are planted in dirt. I will take cuttings from them and plant the cuttings in the stream to root. This worked fine last year.

Now is the time to start watching for the Sunpatiens.

Good luck everyone and please post lots of pics for all of us to enjoy all summer long!

I had two nice baskets of impatiens hanging in my courtyard last year and within two months they looked like the ones in your picture. I got some Sunpatiens but they are pretty much history from the cold days we had in the winter. Not sure what I'm going to put out there this year. Maybe just a green plant like ivy.

Stopped by Lowes and they had their impatiens out, might be a bit early for me, but last spring I had them survive some mid to upper 20s mornings, supposed to get down to 30 I think Monday or Tuesday, but hoping they'll be ok. Put in loads of them in my new gravel/bog filter. Also included a pic of my mini cattail, variegated sweet flag, and water iris waking up. Open spot in the middle I am putting in my biggest taro tuber.

Planted impatiens in my stream and a couple other places about a week ago and they've doubled in size already! I also started some from seed in my floating planter - am anxious to see what color they will be! Pictures soon!

They look great Mark. Hope they do well for you. I will need to wait until next week to plant mine.
Also I have four huge mounds of variegated sweet flag that I need to some how remove from my pond this spring. LOL

And wouldn't you know it, after two days of nearly 80 they are now saying 27 tonight/tomorrow morning and 26 tomorrow night Wednesday morning. Put my deicer back in as it had been keeping the pond in the low to mid 50s, well after being out of the pond for a while, appears the thermostat in it crapped out and its been running non stop, so while its 43 right now, pond temp with the heater running is 75.4, reckon it would keep it at least 60, hoping that will be enough to keep the baby impatiens safe, might try throwing a blanket over them or something the next two nights too.

supposed too freeze here tonight but I went plant shopping today anyway, nancy I bought some Yellow Impatiens again first time I have seen them since I sent you the cuttings. I also bought 45 suncoleus just because they were huge in 4 inch pots and I know if I had waited until next week too buy them they would have moved these into 6 inch pots. I was at a greenhouse not a box store. Thats what they do.

Sleeting/freezing raining now. Pond temp is still 71.1 with the crazy heater running, covered impatiens with a blanket. Depressing weather, I could tell the impatiens had already started putting on some decent growth just since Friday when I planted them.

Hope they will stay warm under the blanket and in the warm water. They may be ok.

Gary that is awesome that you found yellow Impatiens again. I have yet to see them here. Good luck with all of your plants.

We are still warm tonight, but tomorrow night we will be in the 30's.
