Good idea, the roots went at least 8ft into the ground and may have kept going but they do ok in large tubs.

      Muskrat

Don't muskrats dig holes in the bank of streams/ponds etc?

wow, thats alot of learn Koigrl! Anyway I just got the best news ever I am not going to be leaving anymore. So, I have plenty of time on my hands now to deal with the pond issue. I think I am going to go full filtered and the rest. I figure I will have to find a way to do shockcrete or the like. I will have to ponder on this, and since time is no longer an issue it should turn out good.

Expat, yes, the muskrat is burrowing into the bank. This is a bad thing -- but the fact that she is burrowing into the uphill bank, i'm not worried about losing my fish and washing out the road. i have set out a havahart trap baited with apples, no luck. now have added celery thanks to some advice from a KPer. would like to catch her before she has babies!

justin, that was the short version and the hard way!!! still, mud is a piece of cake next to a liner pond, imho. i'm glad you're not going away. take it that was a military deployment? in any case, read the pond forum. you'll find something that is just like what you want to do. save yourself some grief!

lastly, the excavator/bulldozer has been here for a couple of days now. we're filling the pond now. when the pond has water in it, i'll post a thread with plenty of pics, should be after the weekend. the pond turned out to be bigger than i thought; 150 ft. long, by 40 feet wide, by 12 feet tapering to 8 ft. deep. why? i kept saying to my pond guy -- make it as big as you can!!!

after this pond is done, he's doing another, bigger one for the basement koi. it's exciting, and of course, i keep asking myself why?
a friend once said to me, "if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing."
I guess I took this as gospel.

      Hi, expat,
Comes time to harvest, and I hope i don't have to think about that right now, we'll lower the water to about four feet and then wade in. my siene net is about fifty feet across and eight feet high.

right now, we're feeding the new, lower pond from a spring-fed brook that starts about a mile up the mountain. the pond is filling at a tremendous rate. it's up probably three feet since yesterday.

when we start the second pond, uphill from this lower pond, we're pretty sure we're going to have tons a water and will feed the lower pond from the upper pond because the brook goes dry in august.

the pond site of the the soon to be upper pond is a marsh about twenty feet across. it is always wet, all year around. I'm lucky to have clay.

as soon as the lower pond fills, i will post pics!

Lucky you, when it rains we get a great deal of run off from the fields and a couple of nearby ponds (no houses or farming around thank goodness) when it is dry we have a well so like you should be ok. I will send a pic of our pond which is 150x50x6ft approx, I'm hoping to be able to harvest without lowering the water too much as our well has good water but being in shale has a slow delivery.

Here is our mud pond, the 1st pic is it being filled by the well during the startup and the second is some months later just after a good rain. There is a lot of clay in our soil and the pond holds good. The field is 21/2 acres so plenty of room for more, when we can raise the cash!!!!

Expat! that's a lovely pond. love the woodsy setting. how deep is it? can you see your fish, or like me, identify them by eyes and lips? have you thought to put a little dock out there? btw, where are you expat from?

Pond is about 6ft deep and can see fish when they come up to feed. I'm from the UK but my wife is from East TN. When we can have some more holes dug we plan to have 2 at about 50 x 25 x 6 and use them for spawning and raising fry etc. As to the dock I think it would make harvesting difficult?

My dock is a floater. We pull it onto the shore when we clean. Also, mine has styrofoam underneath to give it bouyancy, but the fish hang out under it during the winter. I put the stock tank heater near the dock and i guess that makes the water under the styrofoam a little bit warm. did you look at the dock in my pond? my web site is below. i doubt having a dock is a professional fish breeder thing. just makes the pond more fun.

A floater is an idea, other things to do right now but will add it to the list. Do not intend to be a profesional breeder so can do anything we want to enjoy our pond and fish.

Finally broke down and bought the liner; Then after much fret I threw down a couple layers of underlayment and rolled out a EPDM liner From Firestone. The Koi are happy as can be. Even managed to lure a Great Egret to hunt my poor fish. Unfortunately I lost all but three Koi since then. Pictures soon. :-D
