They will not be available until April most likely. The good news is while culling I did see some very good looking ones in the mix especially in my pond #4. I spawned them in four ponds, but I forgot I lost one pond to dragonfly nymphs, so that left Ochiba spawns in three ponds.

On the negative side, I spawned very late last season due to reexcavating all the ponds. So this left me with smaller then normal Tosai going into winter, and they were not harvested. This means they stayed in the ponds all winter, so I doubt they grew much if at all since then. (It's funny though, the bigger fish Nisei and up always grow substantially thru winter even when left outside in the mud ponds.) The little guys don't usually. The point here is that they will most likely be small for 9 months old in April because five of those months they had no growth most likely. They will catch up when they become less crowded, but basically they will be small for their age.

I can say that in one pond in particular the Ochiba far outgrew the other varieties in that same pond. The Ochiba wer 4 to 5 time larger on average. I did six spawnings of Ochiba all together. Of those I bred my normal stock of two pairings but also did four new ones this year as well. The down side of the new breedings will be the lack of statistics from past breedings. Basically put, I am not sure how they will develop. I am sure of my standard breeders though.

One other possible negative is in one of the other ponds I had larger fish put in it for winter with the Ochiba Tosai due to lack of space, so time will tell if any or how many got eaten in that particular pond.

So what this all means, is I should have tons of Ochiba if there were not too many losses from winter, and the larger fish eating them. I should have all types including Gin Rin and Longfins as well. I will pull pond 4 where I saw the best ones from my normal breeders, just as soon as weather allows, and I can tell you more then. I can also get pictures then.

No, I need you to come and help pull the pond in the 40 degree water
Seriously though, all my employees are in college and won't be back until May or June, and that's assuming they don't have to take summer classes. There is actually a good chance they will have to though. So, it looks like I will be using lots of friends and customers this year for pulling and culling nd such. I will post on the website when the pulls will be. Come on down!

PA is a bit of a commute for me but I am hoping pond 4 yields some beauties. I loved a couple of the Nisai you posted.
Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

so basically everyone gets a koi from the same breeder and sees who can fatten them up faster ? that sound like a lot of fun ! if money permits I would love to do that. especially if it was a UTSURI or Hikariutsuri those are my must haves curently.

I would spend 95GBP =152 dollars for a kOYOGOI but I have bred some this year quite by accedent so cost = $0.00

but as this hobby is infectious I have just got these kogane gin rin ochiba and a ochiba and mano shusui ,and yes two shinoda doitsu showa all Tosai ! for my next breeding project for 2012 a
'' Midori showa goi '' something differant than just a ''Go Sanke'' koi a !

it seems that there in no thread on what the final outcome will look like, so far the only thing i see that is for sure is everyone wants Japanese bred koi. does the organizer of this event want to post a sticky stating what poll wins so we can have final decision on; where the koi is coming from, what variety of koi, what age, and what price. i am very interested in this growout and would love to secure a place within it. thanks guys =)
