Finally...Back in the reef hobby!!! 90gal setup.

It was 2.5yrs ago that I moved and sold off my 150 reef. Real extensive set up...sold it all. I have been playing around with my 90gal salt tank....adding lionfish and harlequin tusks. Not great for a reef...or water quality. Well...the lionfish jumped out and was dead on the floor. Thank goodness my daughter..or the dogs, didn't find him After that...got rid of the tusk..and decided to go reef again. Started actually paying attention to my aptasia, hair algae and red slime issues. They have improved dramatically. So..here it is, my 90reef...just getting started!! I need crocea clams NOW!!!
I'm happy to be back in my other hobby

I am turning green with envy.
That is certainly one of the prettiest tanks I have seen.
I want to turn my 125 gallon tank into a reef tank. I am afraid to try it. I have heard they can be a nightmare, and are a lot of maintenance. I have all I can keep up with right now.

I still have two reef tanks setup and pray to my god every night that when I wake up that the setups were gone. I like them don't get me wrong, but its been many many years since I started and no telling how much $$$$ has been put into them over the years and thats not counting time spent.......

I currently have 2 -175watt metal halides(14k) and 4-65watt bulbs(20k actinic). I had a 150 before..but, when I moved..I sold it all. I would never do a reef that large again. First of all...2-400watt halides, 3-175watt halides..a chiller and 2-300watt heaters...really do a number on the electric bill$$$ The 90 feels like just the right size...big enough to have many corals and be stable, but small enough to control. I really felt like I was married to the 150gal...it needed constant attention. The 150 was a chore...the 90 feels like fun!!!

Man you must have spent all your spare time hatching brine shrimp.
Wished you lived closer I would pay you to set up and maintain mine

I used frozen brine shrimp, mysis shrimp and cyclopseze(?) to feed the corals. All frozen stuff to make life easier. That's what I'm doing with the new tank as well. I really try to keep things simple....more biology, less technology!!!

That's what an indoor overwintering koi tank is for.

Nice start. I've fought back the urge a couple times over the last 3 or 4 years to start a reef tank. Looked at going small with a nano tank but that isn't cheap either. Having the indoor koi tank is like having a huge aquarium so that has helped cool my jets on a reef tank.

I'm not a fan of nano tanks. Simply because stability is the key to keeping corals alive. If your not topping off just right..the salinity or temp changes and boom, case closed. A nano is also a pain if you go on vacation...really can't leave it for too long. I really think the 90gal is my favorite set up. Plenty of room and stability...but not so crazy your married to it.

I also have a 1200gal pool in the basement...about 10 koi and 2 ryukins over wintering in there. It's an unfinished, unheated basement. So, not much fun. I feed the koi once a day...and do water changes when weather permits.

      Brutuscz,

Very nice layout! I need to keep my eye off this thread. I'm afraid to get my feet wet with salt. So very tempting when I see tanks like this

      looks great

the crushed coral/rubble bottom is bad in the long run though. It holds too much detrious..something you dont want in a reef setup

Same thing happens to me every so often but then I start to add up the cost and think better of it. Freshwater is cheap compare to a reef tank. Heck just the lights can start at a few hundred and escalate up from there.

I think the best book to help is aquarium corals by eric borneman. It simply has everything you need. Good detailed info on the different coral species. Nothing on the actual fish or other invertebrates...I use other books for that. I also use www.reefcentral.com for info. It is probably the best reef website. Very huge and very busy.

Kingbashi...those are true works of art!!! amazing!!
