      Quarantine question.

A few weeks ago I bought a little koi and put him into an inside tank for the winter. He is with 2 other fish but they are not from the pond.

My question is: Come spring when I am going to put him out in the main pond how do I do this. Should I bring another fish inside from the pond a few weeks before I know I'm going to put the newbie out? How soon should I expect to put him outside?

I'm sure there will be a temp difference in the water. Do I bag him and float before adding?

When I get a new fish, depending on the source, I keep them isolated for about three weeks, make sure THEY aren't sick. Then I add a "canary" from my population.

Healthy koi will make other healthy koi sick. You want the new fish to come down with your version of the biota while in quarantine - so you can treat them. Its bad when you let a fish lose and it promptly dies.

And if your canary gets sick, you know what bugs to treat for. Whatever made the canary sick, your assumption is, came in with the new fish.

Exactly what Savannah said. I would put the one from your main pond in right away unless you want to extend your quarintine if there is a problem.

Just float the bagged fish to acclimate to quarintine temp and add water from your quarintine like you usually do when you get a new fish.

      Good luck.

I'm in no hurry to get the newbie outside. He will be in til it warms up in the spring. So by what you all have said my game plan is sometime in the spring to bring in a "canary" to be buds with the newbie for a few weeks and make sure their "bugs" aren't going to make each other sick. :D Then take them out and float them as usual before putting into pond. Got it. I think. :D
