its been way to long, been i remember anythonmy (spelling) had a thread about moving beds. that would be a good read for ya prolly. i don't remember if it was about letting k1 mature. or of it was more about getting correct currents from the air bubbles to get media to boil.

I dont know of anyone offhand who has done a moving bed in square container. Maybe Leekinney? Has Birdman done this before?

In my drums, I used a flexible airdiffuser in a circle with one spoke across the middle. It seems to work OK but I bet your square shape might require something different because of the corners. I think I put a bit too much media in mine and it would pack up at the top a bit and slowly, one piece at a time get pulled underwater and move elsewhere. I just decided it wasnt anything I was interested in trying to improve....as long as the water was flowing over the media I was happy.

      .
Yes I have, using the 4 air stones. It worked fine until we got to much media in it and then we started getting pile ups.
Any fluid bed regardless of size or shape will have a sweet spot, once you have found the right combination of water flow, air flow, and media. In most cases air and water flow is set, so we just keep slowly adding media until we see a problem.
I have the absolute max amount of media I can get in my fluid bed filters. They work sweet, until I flush one of my sand/gravel filters. This will lower my pond 1 inch which is enough to hamper the movement of me media in my fluid beds. Once my auto fill tops off the pond the fluid beds work good again.

My suggestion is don't build a moving bed. Use the square container and build an air-lift dilution reactor. I've already done it and it works great, it's cheaper and easier to deal with and you can use the square container easily. Give me a little time to draw it out. I've been busy and haven't had time to do it yet.

K kent thanks for the info. How much of the container do I fill up with K1 to build this time of filter?

Birdman, your findings echo mine...they are fairly sensitive to water levels. A couple inches can make a lot of difference. Curious to figure out what an air-lift dilution reactor is.

None, that's the whole point. You don't move the media but the water only. I use PVC shavings but you can use any open media.
A moving bed moves to promote multiple passes of the water past the bacteria for each one time pass through the filter. An Airlift Dilution Reactor moves the water multiple times and leaves the media stationary. It's my own design.

Seems like if you aerate the water the water is moving. Whether or not the media moves depends on the type of media.

      I'll shut up...

It's about guiding the water movement. An Airlift Dilution Reactor is a "guided flow" aerated biofilter with both direct aerated and non direct aerated bio media.

that is what i kinda assume as well zac, in what kent is stating.

i am doing that right now in 30 gallon trash can that has plastic shut gun wads in it for bio for the one pond down stairs of mine. *thinking about it* i need to go clean those suckers.

though for me at current moment. i am using the 8 prong manifold that connects directly to the 40liter air pump. and driving 8 aquarim air stones. with each air stone located in a 1" pipe. ((its what i had on hand))

i will eventually go with something like your drawing zac. once i get my rear in gear and get a bigger size diffuser that can handle the air flow rate from the air pump.

for me though i also had to do some concrete work in bottom of the trash can to kinda funnel the bottom to the drain / inlet. because of the little dents or what ever you want to call them in bottom of the trash cans. so muck would not get trapped in around the dents.

Sorry, I've been out of town all week doing a seminar for contractors. Just got back. I'll put something together this weekend.

      Thumbs up Better filter

Hallo guys, you just disappeared???? We have right now the same discussion here in Sweden. What is good and healthy water for our little friends? Are you somewhere else on this forum and talking about this? Have you heard anything from Mr Jasper of Holland? Iīve written to Anox Kaldnes in Sweden and Norway, but they are just talking about K1 in itīs commercial use in big wastewater treatment plants and they havenīt had any problem with "starved” K1, but they said that I shouldnīt use too much K1 because Iīll get a more effective media(darker) if I donīt.
I have a friend who has been working with some of them AnoxKaldnes people in a project concerning industrial polluted water and Iīll talk to him this weekend about all them bugs . Maybe he will clue me in; what is healthy water and how to get there. Keep up the good work.
      Greetings from Sweden
      Elias :-)

Any update on this? I'm curious what the layout of an airlift dilution reactor looks like. I need to supplement the filtration on my QT.
