Question Turbo Cleaners & Foam Fractionators...What is the 411???

Does anyone have one of these devices???

My reading tells me that they remove phosphates, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia and other dissolved solids from the pond while reducing pollution, algal growth, blanket weed and increases oxygenation.

Are they a stand alone to replace bio~filtration or something that is added to help take the load off one's bio filter???

Can any pond benefit from having one or just ponds that have a lot of leaf and falling debris issue???

Are they just another band~aid for a poorly designed system???

Would anyone that has one of these units please give some reasons why they like or dislike these things
      !!!

Turbo Cleaner is a model name of a foam fractionator made by Febi. Info here...

      http://www.koicarp.net/filtration/pr...rbo_clean.html

Foam fractionators extract disolved organic compounds from solution by generating bubbles. The dissolved ogranics have a propensity to stick the the surface of bubbles. The bubbles are concentrated by funneling and then collected before they pop. Once collected the bubbles eventually pop leaving a concentrated solution of water and DOC's that drain out of the foam fractionator. There are several such devices designed for ponds.

See here for a cheap one for example...

      http://www.koicarp.net/filtration/pr...n_filters.html

Sometimes a foam fractionator include the facility to attach an ozone generator. The inclusion of ozone at high pH will cause ammonia to be oxidized to form nitrate and water. NH3 + O3 = N03 + H2O (I'll let you add the molecules up, I always go wrong). Inclusion of ozone will also kill (oxidize) pretty much everything that passes through the foam frationator and if any escapes into the pond it will oxidize your fish. Therfore bacteria, algea, anything will be destroyed. Hence the claims.

The Koiphenator knows more about ozone use than I do, will most likely be happy to tell you about it.

They are comonly used in salt water aqariums but as of late (the last couple of years) some people have been producing "Pond" size versions. The "Febi Turbo Filter" was one of the first and works extremely well, I have been told. The only problem is it's made in Germany and very difficult to find a supplier, also it is quite expensive.

I've heard of a U.K. version that can be found at this link
http://www.cloverleaf.uk.net Scroll down to thier Cloverleaf small devices catagory.

I have also heard of a DIY version, but I have heard nothing on it's performance as I know of no-one who has actually made one as you need a very large air pump to create the foam nessesary to actually do the job.

I hope this has answered your question.

I have the Febi and I absolutely love it. It never ever ceases to amaze me and I'm facinated by the "evil" it dumps in the bucket. It also has its' own brain. I wish more people had it - I need someone to agree with me that it possesses a brain. I also love how its portable & can be carried over to a Q-tank, etc. which it is great for. I love it. I've had buckets of nasty from it that is as black as coal, even though I thought the pond was rather clear.

Funny thing, I shut it off & removed it from the pond for a few days to redo my edges. Stirred up some garbage in the process. Hooked up the febi, but she didn't decide to extract. Then I start noticing "bubbles" on the pond for the first time ever. Sure enough, as soon as I saw the dreaded bubbles - she kicked into gear and spewed waste water into the bucket. Bubbles went away in a couple hours. Yes - a brain.
