Where did you get a bristol? They are not commercially available as far as I've been able to tell.

They are available from hobbyist breeders.

Just randomly found Bristols... ? At a LFS or something?
Here 've been looking, and they just pop up for you! One of these days I'll get lucky maybe.

And if you feel the need to find them a new home after that tank is seasoned... I have shipping money!

On a side note.... /offers David a nice cold drink

My yearling females are looking gravid so hopefully after a few loads of daphnia they'll get frisky. Don't want to count any unlaid/unhatched eggs... but maybe...

Here's mine in the pond. I have no problem telling him/her from the other Shubbies.

I actually recently bought the last Shubby that Steve had out of those Bristols. His name is Tennyson... He's 10-11 inches... so he's grown a bit since these pics from the Raingarden website.

I have a few other small Shubbies(2 from a person I know who had two lonely babies... one 1-2in and one 4in... left after a winter of neglect, and one regular 4in sent by steve as a "bonus" with the big Bristol). Anyway, I'm completely in love with him... that's why I'm looking for more... Up until now I have only had fancies... he is so elegant looking.

      Cori

(edit) I really know nothing about fish conformation so he might not be the best... don't burst my bubble too much.

It Looks like I just got regular Shubbunkins, and not Bristols. I don't have the big heart tail on mine.

I am getting some Bristol Shubbunkins in a few weeks. They are coming from the same place I got the regular ones.

Shubunkins with a comet tail can be just as nice (well minus the heart shaped tail).

I have regular shubunkins that I abosolutely would not change a thing about.

Off to pick up 300 large common goldfish, got to love craigs list.

Don't know if mine is he or she. So haven't named it yet. I'm thinking male, but seems too pretty to be a boy...

If mine had breeding stars, I wouldn't be able to see them in the pond...

I can see them on my fish clearly when they come to eat... even some of the little 3-4 inch guys get them. But my pond is raised above ground about 2ft. and I sit next to it and feed them so I'm much closer than normal to them. They are great finger suckers when I put my hand in with no food!

I suppose if I had an inground pond and stood to feed I probably wouldn't be able to see them either. When deciding to build my larger pond this was a major factor in keeping it at least partially above ground. I like staying "in touch" with my fishes so to speak. Most of them will eat from my hand... but I have a few that haven't gotten that brave yet and hang back for when the real feeding comes.

My pond is a little more that 2 ft. above ground also and I can sit on the side, but this one seems a little standoffish and doesn't come close enough. But I didn't really know what I was looking for. I think I see them on your fishes gills.

Yep, that's them... like a teenage boy with acne! They also show up all along the front edge of the pectoral fins(you can see the serrated look in the first pic if you look closely). Easier to see on dark colored fish, but once you know what your looking for they're pretty obvious. Of course male fish don't necessarily have them all the time.
Another good sign is if a fish likes to swim with it's nose right up the tail of other fish... usually a guy chasing a girl who smells eggy because he wants to spawn.

Now you'll know who all your guys and girls are!

I always thought when I saw fish chasing another fish, it was male chasing female. But then when I saw Gary and Tebow chasing a fish, I wasn't so sure. Since they are Koimets and supposed to be sterile. Then I realized that they were just going along sucking in the eggs as they were laid instead of trying to fertilize the eggs. Or I guess that is what they were doing.

I don't have any experience with Koimets... which are a "mule" cross between koi and reg. GF or comets. But I do have a good bit of experience with real mules(the old fashioned horse/donkey cross kind). While mules are sterile they still experience the same hormanal fluctuations and "desires" as their non-mule equine counterparts. I've seen male mules breed with horse mares, and I've seen mare mules in estrus. The deal with mules is just that their eggs or sperm are useless. So I would guess that there is no reason that a Koimet cannot behave as if it is sexually capable for whatever gender it is. Of course thye might have just wanted a snack!

BTW, if you ever need to handle your fish for some reason you can look at their vents to check the sex. It's just the opposite of us humans... the boys have innies and the girls have a small outie.
