New forum - "Please Judge this Koi" For Serious Critique

Members, please note that we have created a new sub-forum of Main called, "Please judge this Koi." This forum is for critical evaluations of koi.

      https://www.koiphen.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=167

Edit: My suggestion is that people include the name of the type of the koi in the thread title. For example, "Please judge my gin rin kohaku," and to limit each thread to one koi, not multiple koi. I think you will get better responses doing so.

Does that mean we should post all of our "Woo hoo, look what I bought" and "lookie what I found on ebay" threads there? Or is it more specifically for the technical posts about judging fish against show standards?

      It is a great idea.
I have no idea what the plans or rules will be but have a thought.

Since the title suggest critiquing/judging a koi/goldfish , then it would be wise to only have it for people that want to see if there is any potential in their purchase or pets. It may not mean show as some people have show quality koi yet never show but they want to know if they made a good choice on a quality purchase or if there is potential in the future of a young fish.

This would keep those with experience more likely to look at the site because it will require their expertise.

Long ago in a universe far removed from this oone..No wait actually it was this one if I remember right....
I asked for a section be put in where if you posted a picture of your fish you weren't looking for the typical two word response of "Nice fish!"...or the "I'll put it in my pond if you send it to me"..
A section where you could call a spade a spade.

This would be for serious critique, for fish to be judged against show standards.

if people make a judgment - good or bad - it needs to be explained - so that this becomes another useful learning place/tool! - not just one word yeh or ney

      I love this new sub-forum.
It gives newbies like me a chance to see what to strive for in our purchases. Explanations of critiques will be critical to understanding it all.
      Thank you!

Bro, a spade is a spade so there can be no confusion

But some koi that are shovels may be called a spade if both are stuck in the ground and the last 6" to 12" you see look almost the same.

That's when we need farmer Jones to come out and explain the differences.

Yes I know the diff between those and a pitchfork also.
But need help with koi feeeshes.

Still think it's a good idea and a way for us to learn.

Right. "Cull it" is of no more value than "nice fish."

Now I must say I like this very much. It accomplishes two things: First, it gives us a place to give and receive serious critique against show standards. My guess is that this is where those "Pick 1, 2, 3 and a tategoi" posts should go, along with other discussions of show-worthiness. Second, it saves everyone time and energy because you need never add disclaimers to critiques.

For example, if someone posts an ebay fish there, you need never say "It has a messy head, the pattern is breaking up, and the conformation is poor. But buy it if you like it." In that forum, you can simply give your reasons why the fish does not conform to show standards and leave it at that.

This is the best addition to this website we could have hoped to see. I just listed my 3 newest koi there. I really hope people take this part of the website seriously. It can improve the educational value of koiphen immensely. It addresses my biggest complaint of this website....not enough angry competitors to give scathing reviews!!! Now give it to me...and make it hurt..LOL!!!

There are a couple of concerns I have:

First: Who's opinions really mean something? For each opinion given, there can be 5 others that would argue against it, and by what/who's standards, other than judges, would they be measured? Show standards are nothing more than some "guidelines" given so that on " a given day" one fish can be selected over the others to win an award. It's all subjective and totally dependant on the opinion/s of the judges at that particular show. A different group of judges could/would possibly end in different results.

Second: Judging fish from pictures, even if only educational, is difficult at best, as to evaluate skin and lustre quality, the fish MUST be seen in person.

Finally, let me say that, for fun, and SOME educational exposure, this is always fun to see photos of higher quality fish. The more exposure to them you have, the more you begin to understand the subtle differences, if the educator knows the bloodline attributes and can relate them well enough to be understood clearly. I also think that there should be a "minimum" REQUIRED "field of information" about the fish in question for a valid discussion,e.g., Size, Age, Variety, Breeder, Bloodline/s if known.

Should we explain why we picked some fish? Might be helpful,

I like the new forum, I know my best koi would not make it in most ponds but I pick him cause I like him. Like anything its a learning curve thats why I post mine to see how well I can pick'em. I'm getting better.

If this posting thread is for LEARNING, I would say, by all means state WHY you selected it over others. If you present your reasoning, then the educated explanation received will be worth that much more to everyone involved.

Sorry if I came off sounding negative towards this idea. I just want to make sure it really will be of educational value.
