      Uncontrolled Spawn 2008

On the morning of May 31st, I had two females spawn. Since I had no more room to separate the koi, I just let it go naturally. One was a 3 year old 24" GinRin Chagoi (also have a male) which I purchased from Sugar Loaf Koi in Sept. 2005. The other female is a 2 year old 19" Showa I purchased from Lee at Thekoifarm.com in June 2006. The Showa had allot more black but within 30 days of putting it in my pond the black faded. Next year I'll separate the pair of GinRin Chagois. Well at least now I know who the males are in my pond!

      June 1st.

The morning of June 1st I had two more females spawn. Both are just pond grade koi from the dealer who installed my pond. The first is a 3 year old 28" very dark Ochiba I think. It was all black when it was 2" long and free. The dealer was giving away fry each time you came to his store. So my wife and I got ten that season, we kept a few and sold the rest. The second is a 3 year old 21" Kohaku.

LOL I am kinda impatient. But I was looking at all those lovely fish thinking WOW! I bet they make nice babies. For some reason the intro just sounded like" Let me show you what I got from that".
Are all those rocks hard on the females when they spawn like that?

      The Fry

Here are photos of some of the fry. The photos showing the fry in the pond were taken on 6/29. The white bucket on 7/13 and the red bucket 12:30 am today. I haven't done anything for these fry until this past week, I started feeding them 55% protein feed. It's very small pellets and it sinks. The only trouble is the big guys also go after this feed. So I feed them at the same time. I think there must be 200 assorted fry in my pond. I guess I'll be catching these fry before winter sets in!!

The big black one which I think is a Ochiba lost a few scales near her tail.

Don't be, now you can see photos of the fry. I don't know what I'll end up with until I catch them later in the fall. By then my tanks in the cellar will be empty and I'll move them into their new living quarters for the winter. I didn't have any problems with the rocks. But as you can see there were 6 to 10 males chasing each female.

      10 week update

Here are some updated photos of my fry born about June 5th. I'm not sure of the actual date as they spawned on 5/31, 6/1 and 6/3. About half are over 3" long now.

I see lots of cute little ki matsuba in the bunch. That was the first fish I purchased for my pond.

Don't know yet. I'm moving my 300 gallon tank setup from my cellar to my back yard. Then I'll catch the fry and sort them out.
