Does pond size affect the maximum size of koi fish?

Some people say it does while others say that it is completely up to genetics. We have an 8 cubic meter pond with 9 koi fish in it, dimensions are 4x2x1 meters. All 9 koi fish are healthy but I wonder how large will they get. The largest fish is a female more or less 1 foot long, will it grow further?

I have heard that Koi secret a "stop grow" hormone that can limit size and works by PPM to the water volume but can be overcome to a point with frequent water changes. And you are correct about genetics in some cases. What type of koi do you have? Your one foot koi probably can grow larger but how much depends on water conditions and genetics.

I have the regular koi, but most of them are good looking mutts. If transferred to a larger pond, will it trigger the growth hormone again?

It's not actually a grow hormone its a stop grow hormone. Its works by being concentrated in a given body of water. Changing water reduces the concentration. The larger pond depends on how many Koi are allready in there and concentration present in that pond.

Koi, if fed properly, have decent genetics and kept in good healthy water will far exceed a stop growth hormone.
When I lived in CA, it was common to see quite small ponds (1200-2000g) with up to 30 koi and most over 26" and a couple past 30".
I'm sure some was water quality but a lot of it was good genetics and feeding the koi to achieve that size.

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

Auburn University Grad student out this to rest in the 1970's?). He put a small carp in a 55 gallon drum(on its side and kept the water good and the food coming....when the experiment was "over" the fish was around 30lbs...the reason the experiment ended was because the Doctoral student got what he needed. the carp had not quit growing. Poor water quality limits growth more often than a growth-inhibiting hormone.

Did the Grad student ever mention if he used flow through water or frequent water changes?

I was once told I would never grow large fish in my pond at my shape, depth, overall volume, etc.....I recently lost an 8 year old Chag that was 32 inches. I have a Yamabuki that is 3 years old and I think it is now larger than the Chagoi was. I don't think pond size matters as much as a multitude of other factors. Feed the fish, keep the water nice, and it will grow.

I see no mention of an adequately matched air pump and big disc type air stones turning the stale water over and over allowing it to re-saturate with the oxygen-rich

      atmosphere above it.

If you're willing to put in the work they will keep growing.
