      Mega Fry Fatalities :(

I have a natural pond that is now 2 years old. 100' x 40' x 7' All rock lined with spots of algea growing here and there. Last weekend I had 5 females spawn and had eggs everywhere, a few days later there seemed to be hundreds if not thousands of fry everywhere. Up until last night we had seen them swimming in large groups aound the edges. This morning they all seem to be dead. I have spotted one live one still swimming around. What could have caused all of these fry to die. I have a fountian in the middle and an alita 80 pump running with 2 diffusers. I add dry bacteria 2x a month. This is my first spawn so I'm not really sure what the norm is.

      Thanks for your help

My guess is you experienced the "normal" die off and there are probably still many more in there, they are just harder to see??

questions about the pond. Did you build and it has rocks on the bottom?

Can you test the water? ammonia, PH, nitrite and kh. Whats the water temp?

The reason I said I had a mass die off is because they were floating at the edges. Cindy - I had the pond redone last year and the entire pond is lined with cobble stones. Water temp is roughly 78 and no I don't normally test for ammonia, ph ect....

99% certainty it is what you "don't do" that reveals the culprit.
As nice as it is to think of this as a "natural" pond it is in fact a closed system with zero filtration. Spawning activity releases a massive amount of ammonia wastes into the water which makes it difficult for even a well filtered pond to manage. It you are relying on the fountain and the rocks to keep your water in good condition there is little chance of fry surviving. You are fortunate that any other fish are still alive all things considered.

I also agree. When I hatched fry from my spawn last year, I was amazed at how quickly the ammonia sky rocketed. Guessing it was a combination of several factors, mainly to do with water quality.

The pond is +- 90k gallons with 32 koi of varying lengths and a handful of sunfish and bass. I regularly add Aquaclearer. Do you still think it was ammonia ? If so I guess you live and learn, it was our first spawn so next time I know what to do

Plus the thousands of fry you mentioned. Could it be that the ammonia from these growing fish hit a certain fatal level, and then dropped back down as you removed them from the system? A test kit would have shown . . .

90,000 gallons of unfiltered water is roughly equivalent to 9,000 gallons of properly filtered water under the BEST of conditions. The fish load you have in that pond is already over the top all things considered, and one spawn is more than enough to send the water around the bend. Fry are easily "fried" by poor water conditions, and they have not had the opportunity to acclimate to the water as your adult fish have. Koi are rather delicate compared to most fish, so the chances of fry surviving are slim at best.

So the fry died about a week after spawning? Might have been ammonia like others have said, but it might also be that they starved to death. I believe that most fry ponds are conditioned to have the right microscopic foods for fry to eat. If it's not there, they could have starved.

Just my uneducated 2 cents worth....

      I agree with toragoi.
the fry ate all the food and weren't getting any powder fry food from you.
you might have a couple of hundred living in the rocks

The bass would also eat the fry, wouldn't they?

Definitely, but that is only the survivors. The largest "observable" mortality rate in this case is the massive number of dead floaters. If the bass had eaten them they'd be just as dead, but a lot tougher to see (unless you are a bass turd inspector)
