Pictures of new wen growth on a young oranda, anyone?

I think that might be the issue with my two new ones - they have whitish looking areas on their wens - I'm pretty sure it's not ick because there are no small white spots - just sort of whitish-looking areas. Anyone have any ideas? I looked on the JoAnn's goldfish site and she described it, but no pictures.

Here are some pictures of what I'm talking about - please excuse the

spots on the glass of the bowl - the spots on the fish are only on the head.

try rubbing it softly with your finger. Sometimes since they are rough, stuff gets caught.

Have you added any salt? Mine did that too but it cleared.

Thanks, Cindy. I read that. I'll rub it lightly and see what happens. I have them isolated in a 2gal bowl with some ick medication in it. Should I add salt on top of that? How much should I add? I have no way to measure concentration, so would a tablespoon be sufficient? Should I take them out of it tomorrow? Thanks for your help!

I'd get them out now. 2 gallons is not sufficient for 1 fish, and definitely not for 2!! I'm afraid of more harm than good. If they have ich you would want to treat the entire tank anyway

I did take them out this morning and did about a 40% water change in the big tank. I've also treated with ick meds. I lightly rubbed the spot on the chocolate one's head, but it didn't come off, so I dabbed it with some peroxide. He's swimming around with the others and seems fine. The spots on the calico have almost disappeared, so I do think it might have to do with growth of the wen. If the chocolate one's spot doesn't clear up soon, I'll isolate him again somehow and treat him with something else. I also have medicated food, bot for parasites and some for bacterial infections. Should I give them any of that?

He hasn't been very frisky today since I put him back in with his friends. He's just sitting on the bottom much of the time - very unlike his usual behavior. I wonder if one of the others could have taken a chunk out of his wen? Wonder if the pleco did? I haven't seen him mess with the orandas, so I really don't think it was him, at least I hope not. The little oranda was sitting near the pleco's tail a little while ago - the pleco was attached to the back of the aquarium near the downspout of one of the filters. I'm thinking that he wouldn't be near him if he had hurt him, but then I don't know how fish think. Thanks for you suggestions. I'll post any changes.

If you have a common pleco in there I'd get it out. That is something I read over a koko's goldfish site, common plecos will go after fancy goldies eventually. I have one that I will need to find a home for one of mine too because I did not know that about them either.

Unfortunately I don't have a home for this one. I'd have to euthanize him and I don't want to do that, especially when I don't know that he did the deed. I don't know anyone around here with an aquarium and there are no pet stores nearby. He's a good size fish - about 6-10" now. He outgrew my tropical tank so that's why I put him in the tank with the goldfish. I know they can't go outside, but I don't want to put him out there anyway because he might bother my pond fish. I'm not sure he did it, but I'm going to keep a watch and hope that it doesn't happen again. If someone is willing to pick him up or pay the shipping, they can have him for free.

If your goldfish is sitting on the bottom hear him, then the pleco WILL go after him. Can you move the little guy somewhere else, until he heals completely? he may just be a sitting duck, if he's not feeling well.

I'm going to put him back into the fish bowl. I think the pleco went after him. Poor little guy. I saw the pleco near him but he moved when I walked out there as if I had caught him doing something he shouldn't. Now I don't know what to do with the pleco. He's too big for my other aquarium and I don't want to put him in the pond with those fish because he might go after them, although they are all bigger and faster - the only small ones are comets and I don't think he could catch them.

The pleco is waaay too big for the bowl. The oranda was only 3" so I put him back in it with the air stone. When I checked on him this morning, he was dead. The pleco is going into my smaller pond outside - it has no fish but lots of plants and algae, so he can live there. Hopefully I can find a home for him before next Winter, because I know he probably wouldn't survive the Winter. No more plecos for me!

I was too, Cindy. Very sad. He must have been hurt worse than I realized or I wouldn't have put him back into the big aquarium where the pleco could attack him again. I just hope the pleco doesn't hurt any of the others before I can get him out of there and into the pond.

You can have plecos, just not common pleco's. High fins, rubbernosed and others are ok with goldies
