How has the economy effected your koi budget

The koi hobby is a luxury for most and luxury items are usually the first to get cut from the budget. So I am wondering how many of you have had to reduce or even eliminate your koi budget. Will you buy more koi this season? Maybe buy fewer or lesser expensive koi? Will you build/expand your current pond or filter system or hold off until thing improve? Will you hire an installer or go more DIY?

Just trying to get a sense of what people are looking to do this season and how you will be spending your money, if at all.

We are just getting the pond up and running this year so I am sure I will spend plenty of money on it!

I have no "koi" budget. We DYI everything from roofing to plumbing. Are in the market for a house, with all the foreclosures the time seems right for a bargain, and building a "real" pond at a new place.

Ummm I have room for one or two more Koi, so waiting and looking very selectively for a sanke and or a kohaku. I'd like to get them young so I can afford better quality.

I have decided to switch food this year, so trying some expensive and some more reasonable.

On equipment I have ordered a carbon block filtering unit for the pond that hasn't come in yet. I'm saving for a water softener and looking at models/features now. I'd love to afford an RO unit, but thats not going to happen. I want to get filter and softener units for the house also, so this is going to keep the penny jar empty for a while.

I'm sure I'll end up spending a small fortune on Koi again this year...I always do. I'm rather lucky, because the current economy hasn't really affected me all that much...yet.

I think it will be less koi shows for us unless the gas prices go down. As for buying koi, hasn't stopped me yet and for pond upgrades, at this time I do not think DH has any plans for that other than finishing up the back deck and landscapeing!

My experience is that most "high end" hobbies are not so much impacted by swings in the economy. Folks who have the dough for this stuff tend to have it regardless of what the common folk have going on. JMHO

I'm spending less this year. Because I'm spending more on the basics, gasoline/energy, food. Just got a new car, so insurance is up again (last car was 10 years old), little things eating away at disposable budget. All that and I am in the mode where pond building is making way toward maintenance, and fish are currently overstocked, so have to reduce before adding any more... but I did see some nice ones from Hanover... must reduce stocking first, and figure out what my budget actually is.
