I buy 12 pound sacks of baking soda from Sam's Club for about $4.50 per 12 pound bag. The local swimming pool store and the local farm store carries 50 pound bags, I prefer the 12 pound bags because 12 pounds at a time is "just right" for baking soda addition to our koi ponds.

It's in the aisle with the flour and other baking stuff!

Duh! Too small of an amount to calculate on only 1/2 cup of coffee. You use 1 lb. to 1,000 gallons to achieve an increase of about 70 points.

For all intents and purposes, the pH will only rise to 8.3 and will go no higher. After that, it's really kinda hard to get the KH too "high". During the summer, when we have heavy rain, I keep my KH at 200-250. During the winter, I let it drop to about 150. The pH, however, remains 8.3 regardless, because the baking soda stabilizes it.

We use it in the pool too. We just ordered 6 cases of 2 pound boxes from the A&P.
.45 a pound. Figure it'll keep the kids busy ripping open the boxes.

I don't belong to Sam's or Costco although they are around. I get BS at a non membership discount restaurant supply store called "Smart & Final" for about $4 a 10 Lbs bag. It's with the flour and baking goods. I think that chain is all up and down the west coast, but not central or east coast. We affectionately call that store "Fart & Smile"

My point is that you can also find BS at non membership places for about the same price as the membership places. Look on the baking isle at almost any restaurant supply store.

I've never really thought about my Sam's membership ... I save enough on any singular visit to pay for the annual fee, so it's a no-brainer for me . But yes, if there aren't any around ... there are other alternatives

I have, at one time or another, belonged to several of these membership places. I have found that they do have good prices on some things, but not all things. I don't appreciate the lines they tend to have at the cash register. I've timed it, 45 minutes is just killer.

Adding BS will raise your Kh, Kh will stabilize your Ph, Ph swings can kill your Koi. One pound of BS per 1,000g of water will raise your Kh by 70ppm. A range of 80 to 100ppm is needed to stabilize your Ph, 200ppm is recommended if you have a bead filter.

Also, Kh is indirectly used by your bio filters. More specifically, the bio algae produce acidic ions when they processes the ammonia or the nitrite. That acidic ion gets balanced out by the alkalinity (or base) from the Kh.

So your pond Kh will go down as your bio alga works, plus you will want to add maintenance amounts to match your water change.

      Brad

Edit: Long story short, on a regular bases. I adjust mine little amounts each week. Some adjust theirs more but less frequently.
