      ohhh boy!

I have had a couple shiro utsuri in my history, but nothing as good in a blood line as this. I'm excited about this growout. I know I'm not the only ponder out that there that has tried SUs before only to be disappointed in the long run. I have my hopes up that the blood line will produce some gorgeous SUs.

The only failures are those that stop trying! There is a very thin line between procrastination and delayed gratification. You won't be happy with what you want, if you aren't happy with what you have. It's not what you are looking at, but where you are looking from.

I've noticed that you got a few. I'll just have the two once they get here. I don't know as yet if I'll keep them both or just the better looking of the two. Maybe I should have ordered three...

Brad, when will you new Shiro's arrive. Bet you are excited to see them in person.

What size are they and who is the breeder, I have not been following the threads about the grow outs?

They are an omosako line koi. The breeder is Masaoki, Shintaro helped with breeding and selection, he is Shintaro cousin. Shintaro has had many good shiros over the years. He usually picks 20-30 of them to grow out in his ponds. He would breed Shiro but has no room for additional types of koi. It is cheaper and easier to let his cousin do the breeding.

Whoops... I don't get to this thread all the time.

I think they will be 5 to 7 inches, that is based on what Matt said quite some time ago. They might be bigger. Matt just posted as to the breeder and blood line.

I don't know when they will ship as yet. Last year the SoCal grow outs were shipped to the ZNA SoCal show and split up from there. This year they will come after the show.

      An update...

It's 10:12 and they are due by 10:30... They will come just in time for the ZNA SoCal monthly meeting this month, it will be this Sunday at my house. They will be in the QT, but I'm sure some will want to see them.

      Come on FedEx...

      There here!

Well FedEx was on the dot at 10:30am. The driver was handling them with great care and it showed when I opened the box.... A little stressed, but just a little.

I floated the bowl in the QT, gently dumped cargo bags into bowl, added a bit of chloamx, added a bit more QT water. Then photographed them as we waited for them to warm up. After a 30-ish minute photo shoot I hand moved them from bowl to QT, then dumped the bowl water out.

Pictured here are my two random selections, their box buddies, and a group shot.

Matt: They are all absolutely fine from the trip. The quality is better than I had expected (for all 4 of them) and the Ochiba Shigure is larger than advertised. I think I owe you one. Thanks Matt

Well my wife came up with names that work for the 2 Shiro Utsuris

Mascara - Has the face with a mask with a white circle over left eye
Mariah - Has the face with left half white and right half black

      Both have interesting faces.

Brad - this is a "trying to learn" questions and not anything else ...

you say .. "I floated the bowl in the QT, gently dumped cargo bags into bowl, added a bit of chloamx, added a bit more QT water."

      - i thought you left them in the floating bag - for the temp to equal out - before - releasing them into the water ?

      - any reason for doing it this way ???

You can do it lots of different ways. The temp change takes a little time to adjust, but it's not the only change they get hit with. The water in the bag is usually loaded with ammonia, so I like to add a bit of chloramx to counteract that. I'm sure the water started out great, but the fish get scarred in route and really mess it up. The bigger the fish and the more the fish the worse that water may be. Also the addition of some of my QT water adds water with O2 in it and it starts getting them used to the difference between the two waters. I add a cup, wait a few minutes, add a cup, wait, add, wait, add... until the water level is enough to be low on the gill plates in the bowl. My water is high Ph and hard, not sure what the dealer had.

In summary... I remove ammonia right away and I try and give them a gradual transition of both temp and water. The water temp adjusts slower through a bowl as it would a bag. Is this better than floating a bag? Maybe, maybe not...

Thanks Matt, Your a class act. You got better things to worry about than my order, but maybe that's what you need right now. I've got my fingers crossed for you and Katie.

We really like both SUs, nice faces and good mix of sumi to shiro. I'm excited to watch these two grow.

All the Koi were better than expected. It was my pleasure to order from you.

I was puttering around in the garage yesterday doing a scrape and scope on everybody (clean bill of heath all around) and later I realized I didn't take any pictures. So at feeding time this afternoon I took a few.

I love the SU in the first picture (Mariah). She ate and ate and ate... way more than her share... I took this after the food was gone she was back looking for more.

The second shot has both SUs, Mascara is low center and Mariah is to the right. The Sanke from Matt is at about at 9 o'clock (not at left edge).

      Brad

Edit: Corrected the time, should be 9 o'clock, not 3 o'clock
