      I paid $1.49 for the 8" @ Lowes - probabably not the cheapest - but very close and since I had to make multiple trips (they are heavy) - this was best for me

      I asked this question a while back because the Menards here had 8x8x16 block for only $0.79. I thought maybe they were of a lower grade because of the price. The folks who responded pretty much said a concrete block is a concrete block, and as long as they were basically going to act as forms for concrete, enjoy the good price. They have actually gone up a bit, around $0.89 or $0.95, but they are still under a buck in my area.

      my bill in Oct 07 has

      6" trusses .205 per ft (these are what I installed between every 3 courses.)

      I went with standard weight block (not light weight)
      and not solid blocks.

      4"= $1.25 ea
      6"= $1.50 ea
      8"=$1.73 ea
      10"=$2.19 ea
      12"=$2.55 ea

      bag of Portland cement $9.20 (I think 80 lbs)
      mortar $7.35 (I think 70 #)
      #4 1/2 " rein-rods .44 per ft
      mason sand $35.95 per ton (2000 lbs)

      Than a 5% contractor discount (I asked and they gave it to me, no I am not a contractor. But my contractors without accounts there use my account. No markup for them and discount for me )

      I go directly to the cement plant where they grow them to get them.

      Last year, 8x8x16 blocks were $1.38 at Lowes, and $0.99 at Home Depot. I hope they're the same this year, I'll need 300 or so.

      My DH said that there is a place that makes them near here so I'll go out there and buy them. The 8" ones are $1.39 at Lowes here.

      Alright thanks all for responding while i was at work. I now have a good idea of a base price on them with all your prices. Hopefully I can go out now, find some good deals :D. I know their are a couple large concrete company's here in north Georgia I will get quotes from them. I would imagine it would be cheapest at the source *crosses fingers*

      There is a huge brick yard here locally. Probably takes up 10 acres. They sell new 8" for $1.36. But they have about an acre of 2nds, missed matched colors laying around they sell for 50 cents each. Ask around for 2nds.

      I bought them direct from a block maker here for 76 cents apiece. And had 900 block delivered and stacked where I wanted them for a $90 fee. It was a awesome deal. Heres some PICS.

      Might not hurt to check you local CraigsList postings. Unless you need them NOW search for concrete, cement, cinder and see what pops up. I got 40 for $20 one time and some free ones another time.

      have found it cheaper myself, to just have menards / lowes / local brick yard, just do the delivery for me. so it costs $50 to $75 bucks, by the time ya count in multi trips and gas money, for a pallet or more of concrete blocks. it was worth it for me. then again for me i am 30 to 45 minutes away.
      Pond and Construction Forum 101 good place for any first timers to the forum. for finding resources and general info.
