Anyone here keeps them - especially the illegal ones?
I am thinking about getting back on keeping this majestic fish. I know someone here has them in their koi pond.

Happy Koiing!!! Water and nothing but water or filtration????
Illegal ? what do you mean.
Oh yeah people keeping illegal fish are gonna jump right on a public forum and say "Me me, I got one"
I don't think so!
Why are arrowanas illegal anyway?

They aren't illegal in Oregon. They can't survive in the local waters. They are South American..native to the Amazon. I think they are really cool fish and they become really friendly. Be prepared to buy bigger tanks every couple of years and they live a long time and get BIG. Cool fish.
Sorry to say that I've never heard of them What are they?
Lori - is that yours? Nice! It's hard to find the arowana in that color nowadays!
Yes, it's illegal in some states! It's illegal to bring from other countries! Especially from Thailand.
I used to have the African silver arowana. I raised it from 4" to 48" in less than two years!
The only arowana I can find in local stores are silver arowana.

From what I know in the aquarium hobby, only the asian arowana (the attached photograph) are the "illegal" ones. Otherwise, silver arowana, black arowana, and the australian arowana are readily available at pet shops. The asian ones are the most prized due to their varied color hues and rarity as well.
tcheung - you're right. Asian Arowanas are illegal.
Read this article. There was another incident in New Jersey few years back.

It's ironic that the US have, among the best, resources to raise and increase the population of those fish, yet it's illegal.
I've seen a 2" super chili red arowana that cost 5k, quite outrageous.
IMHO the best thing for endangered species is captive breeding . I mean that fish is soooo pretty . They wont be endangered for long .
If Asian red arowanas were not illegal, I would want one. I really like em! They need a lot of space though and would require a big tank. Besides the Asian varieties though, some of the other varieties look pretty awesome too once they are mature.
They became illegal to import to the U.S. due to being endangered I think in the 70's and back then, I believe all the arowana were wild caught (the father mouth broods the babies for protection, so the father used to be killed to get the babies in the mouth). But now, there are many Asian breeders that captive breed these great fish and it is not clear why the captive bred Asian is not available for import still.
Here is a nice photo I got off the net. Disclaimer, I do not own this fish or any illegal Arowana.
- Wayne, could use some lucky "Dragonfish."

Some species are likely illegal due to the potential risk of being introduced into local waters. Same happened with paranas. We now have a asian snakehead population in the Potomac river system due to their release. The smallmouth bass and channel catfish are not native either, so I don't find it a big deal myself (only in this particular case).
Hi Jesse,
In NYC, one restaurant had 2 goldened back arowanas displaying in the reception area. They told the authority that they were Australian kind, but they got busted because the fishes have tag imbedded in them when they were young. I don't think the owner is stupid. He is just being arrogance and someone ratted him out - perhaps his competitors. In HK, you need to get a permit to keep them.
Due to the CITES agreement, US doesn't allow endangered animal to be imported into the country. You can buy them in Canada! I have never done such transactions... I go to Toronto twice a year and the temptation is always there!!! If you get caught at the border, you will be fined $10G and up to 5 years in prison. I envy the Canadians. The US should revoke this band or require permit to keep them since most of arowanas sold in pet store are captive breed anyway. I keep the legal ones for years, but they are nothing compared to the illegal ones. They are so majestic and beautiful! Oh, they priced the fish by the inch - some can go as much as 5K an inch. Next time if your DH or DW as you how much you paid for that 30-inch koi, you said only 5K. That is a bargain compared to people keep Asian arowana. You only get 2 inches for 5k and consider yourself lucky that I don't like arowana

There are some that are illegal. I believe some are on the endangered species list.

For arowana, you keep one per tank as they usually fight. But for koi, how many do we all keep/buy???? lol

Does anyone here keep arowana together with koi? I have read that arowana may occasionally attack koi... Arowana can be pretty vicious fish.
Arowana's are a hoot, keep one in a tank in the house and lift the lid.
Turn out the lights in the room and light up a cigarette.
In a few minutes you will be shot in the face with a water pistol from the Arowana's mouth.
It is how they debilitate insects in flight to knock them out of the air and into thier mouths.
A mature Arowana can spit at you from several feet away from the tank.
I would shy away from putting Koi and Arowana together, they were not meant to share the same enviroments.
They do very well with parrot fish and large angelfish.
The more you think know, the less you learn.
