I know what you mean... it didn't take nearly as much as I thought. Here's Kent Wallace's take on his for another opinion... about 5" per layer. Again, not much.

After I did the last larger size layer, I filled the remaining space with sand/chicken grit to the correct level.

Thanks for the link. That first layer is easily under 5", but I guess I'll go with it and start the other layers tonight.

Does anyone have any idea on how many pounds of the chicken grit I'll actually need? I have some local farm friends trying to get some for me but I'm not sure how much to ask for.

I ended up using 2.5 50 lb bags for each of my 55 gal drum based filters. I ordered 6 bags and have one in reserve for the day I need to top off from loses.

Found this in an earlier post....

1 to 2 cubic feet of each of the 3 sizes of gravel, (10 gallons each)
150 to 200 lbs of fine granite chicken grit or #8 sand blasting sand.

I have my first two layers in and didn't use that much. Going on birdman's suggestion of a 5 gallon bucket worth that only works out to about 2/3 of a cubic foot per layer. I could add more to the second layer if need be, i haven't put in the pea gravel yet and I'm still working on sourcing the chicken grit.

      I use these:

The remove the screen and I toss the gaskets and use PL to seal.

I used the same drain is Steve but I left the screen on and I also removed the rubber gasket. I also roughed up around the drain hole with my palm sander before I installed the drain. I used a different adhesive though I guess it's just a matter of taste or availability.

I believe it is just the name of a certain construction adhesive made by the PL Company.

Like Cheryl and several others have said, PL is just a Polyurethane roofing sealant. This is the stuff I've always used
but the others probably will work just as well:

A heaping 5 gallon bucket will give you 3" layers. I then use about 150 lbs of grit.
