      my 25,000 gallon mud pond

just recently i dug our mud pond... we had decided to keep it exposed to the mud then to add a liner...

      BUT NOW......

i noticed there are quite a few crawdad "homes" in it.

should i add a liner? because i planned on placing 200+ 2-3" koi from blackwater in there. i was wondering if crawdads ate small fish?

i have a large enough liner to place in there if it is a problem.

      thanks

      -eric

      P.S. will add pics soon

      Hi, Eric,
I've just seen your post. What's your water source? Do you have a spring? or a stream? I have a mud pond and i love it.

my water source is rain.... i've got 5-55 gallon barrels to fill up with rain water, to dump into the mud pond... i also have water coming off of our lawn. every time it rains it floods... so i am placing pipe in the ground to irrigate the water to the mud pond. i also have 3" water line running out to the shop so i can hook up out 4" hose and run it out there(strictly for filling up after harvest) water is not going to be a problem where i live, it would be the wildlife.

Eric.. Are you sloping the side's?? If not you need to or they will just fall in an keep falling in..I had a 1/4 acre mud pond dug last year and I wanted the side straight up and down and the guy wouldnt do it.. He told me that they will just fall in, makeing it not as deep.. Good luck with it..

My pond guy suggests 35 to 45 deg for stable sides, don't forget your koi will be busy digging into the bottom of the sides as well as the natural action of wet earth/clay to settle. Good luck.

got the same advice from my pond guy. eric, if you choose to go with straight sides, just know that the sides can cave-in while you're standing on them. especially since you're in a flood-zone.

personally, i do not think we will "flood" we have a lake behind us for the cows... all the tiling pipe leads there. my sides are not straight down... they have a small slope.. hard to tell in the pictures.. but they all slope in toward the pond.. the last 4 foot (towards the bottom) those sides are straight down.. my dad has been a house builder for over 26+ years, and he does not think that our sides will fall in. he said "we will worry about that when it happens, don't try to count your chicks before they hatch."

I dug a 15000 gal mud pond a few years back.. It was 6 feet deep and now is about 4 foot and about 2 foot bigger then it started out being. I hope you have better luck then I did.. My big pond 2.5 acre's is on a 1 to 1 slope..

I would take advice from people who have built mud ponds before. Why worry about it when it happens, fix it now and be good to go. Easy to slope the sides now as you are building, then to have to drain and start all over, and possibly kill all of your 200 koi in the moving process and wall slides.

Are you going to put any clay in to bolster the water retention ? or letting nature and rain take care of it all.

our dirt out where i am is clay... i cannot slope the sides because it has already filled up with rain water.. and it has been to wet to get the backhoe back out there to do anything else.. anything that needs to be done will have to happen next year after i harvest.
