Exclamation DIY & MODs (do it yourself / make your own) 3rd edition.

welcome to the 3rd edition of DIY & MODS thread.

      =============================================

      **WARNING DAIL UP USERS**
there are alot of pictures on this thread. so many in fact that they prolly will not load in the first 3 to 5 minutes. and because of this. you will need to REFRESH the page every 3 to 5 minutes a couple times to get all the images to load for you. the REFRESH button should be located in the very top of your web browser window.

i know its a pain dail up users, because i myself am using dail up as well. but the choice was made to keep all info in a single thread. to help maintain it better and in a sense force folks or rather get newbies to see other things. in which they might not see if they had to click on another link.

      =============================================

SPECIAL THANKS to those who had posted a DIY/MOD, without you... this thread would be far gone by now.

      ..:: Instructions ::..
Click on Image to View DIY
Please WAIT for Images to load - Thank You
(If there is an "X" / empty image, Please PM me or reply to thread.)

Barrells / Drums / trash can filters

Barrells / Drums / trash can filters
Static & Moving Media Combo Filter for QT by Ronin-Koi aka Wayne (Pg.5)
a wealth of information of details and pictures. For this DIY Nexus. At post 85, Ronin-Koi gives a good follow up and suggestions based on his oringal design.
      Vortex Filter (55 Gallon) by palerider23 (pg.1)
a simple vortex filter. Filter lacks possible upgrades to pre filter baskets or micro screen. Due to outlet postioned high on barrel. Special note I for see possible air being sucked down the pipe as a possible problem for some folks, note the vortex of water spinning just above the outlet.
55 Gal Drum Sand and gravel filter by Kent Wallace (pg.1)
dail up users it is worth the wait of seeing all the pictures. This is ment as a fines filter that is pump feed. Special note I like the inlet water manifold and air cleaning manifold in bottom.
Dale & Patti's QT - archive by wcstory by Gene (Pg.2)
abit of old school filteration , but for a QT tank, combo filter, and general shower filter. It has worked for them and others.
strainer / Colander / easter grass filter by MrPIG
double check yourself with his warnings about easter grass, beyond that, nice little setup for a QT tank.or any small size pond!
      the "Lexus Eezy-Breezy" by B
a descent amount of info and pictures. But for a complete novice you may want to look at other filters first, then look at these 2 filters, to get idea of whats going on.
moving bed bio filter by anthonym
basic moving bed filter. Good read for anyone making a moving bed, and dealing with water currents and getting the media to churn. Special note. There around post 44 / 45 I want to say, there is a key post that may be of intrest and getting the media to churn and boil. in that is ageing of the media.
oystershell fines filter by birdman ( Steve )
a simple fines filter using oyster shells as media. Some varying problems that had to be worked out.throughout the build. Side note ya gotta checkout those cleaning pictures of the filter from Robert! Awe easy cleaning of a filter indead! And then a nice comparsion of Birdman cleaning his DIY oystershell filter.
      oysterhshell fines filter by Robert
he has a couple good shoots of air cleaning manifolds in the bottom of a couple filters, along with some good pictures of his oyster shell filters. Info is inter mix with birdmans thread
creating a cone bottom for containers by JR Johns ( www.gardenendeavors.com )
a wealth of details and information detailing of putting a cone into a bottom of a trash can. From looks the cone goes inside the trash can. And there is no cutting of the bottom out. Pic is of him cleaning his oyster shell filter
Cone for 55gl Vortex by modan (Pg.5)
the cone itself worked, but after some time the cone seperated from the barrel, it is a good read for those that are trying to comprehend cone bottom filter chambers.
combo static, moving bed filter by Moneypit
not much for details, gives good pictures showing atep by step doing for the filter.
      combo filter by shortypen
not much for details or descent construction pictures,

SC / Settling chambers / vortex chambers / pre mechanical filters / and of the like

Static Kaldnes K1 chamber by Mick (www.koicymru.co.uk) (Pg.3)
a unquie way to build a pre-filter basket for a settling chamber, using the netting.
Static Pre-filter by Kent Wallace (Pg.1)
dail up users it is worth the wait, the pre filter basket is a manufactored item that Kent makes and sells. Some good pictures of pvc shavings are also in the thread.
      S.I.M.P.L.E. (Easy) thread by B.Scott (www.koiquest.co.uk) (Pg.3)

Static Kaldnes Chamber (EAzy) by CarolinaGirl (Pg.3)

Humble Filter Re-do by team Cindy (Static and fluid K1) (Pg.5)
from foams and matt media that were a pain to clean to new school filteration. Gotta see those first pictures to truly understand how messey it is to clean foams and mats!!

suggest reading this first, before looking at ( mekoi ) microscreen build. Both are filled with details and pictures!
      DIY. Microscreen by mekoi (Pg.3)
suggest taking a look at ( Ryan S. ) micro screen build first, then taking a look at this thread for more comments and questions that may help you build a DIY micro screen.
500 gal ag tank / vortex filter by birdman ( Steve )
it is well worth it, in checking out this DIY settling chamber with pre filter basket! More so for you folks with big size ponds! Perhaps the hurdle is getting over 55 gallon drums and moving into the bigger sized tanks for better settelment and higher flow rates through your filters. for the bigger size ponds.
      Fiberglassing a Vortex Filter by B (Pg.1)
good details and pictures. Project seems to have come to a hault and not completely finished.

while I am not a big fan of in pond filters, the use of the aquacube and how it was done is unquie in itself. Good details and information. Perhaps the aquacube could be used in channel filtering and remove it out the pond.

TPR's ( tragental point returns) / GPR (gap point returns) / mid water pickups / mid water returns / pipe boots / bulkheads / diy bulkhead wrenchs
      pipe boots by harveythekoi
bulkheads, unsieals, flanges, toliet flanges. Are so expensive. And when ya have that budget that we all do, this little gem can save you some cash. When you have a liner pond.

some things to think about when using a kiddies pool or like. Were the liner streaches some when filled with water. Could cause a leak around a bulkhead. Gives info to get around such a problem DIY style.

when that bulkhead is leaking water all over your house, and you need that one wrench you do not have to tighten the bulkhead right that second that you need it, this wrench could be made in a couple minutes. Hopefully a picture = a 1,000 words.

bad doings with a mid water pickup by kwickcut
ment to be a MWP (mid water pickup) but the given drain does not give any sort of way to hold the actual drain into a concrete wall. meaning most likely after a couple years. if this was to be installed, it will push out and away from wall. which whould end up causing a leak....

      skimmers / skimmer modifications
Savio Compact Skimmer Mod. by Kent Wallace (Pg.2)
Kent wasn't satisfied with the high frction loss and draw down in the skimmer. So he modded the skimmer to handle higher flow rates
waterco skimmer mod by kent wallace
one of many of kent's wallace MOD's, in this installment, wanted to convert the pool skimmer into a gravity flow skimmer for a pond. Good details and pictures like always!
indoor no-niche skimmer by Koi is the Best
makes new meaning of a stand pipe, for that is really all it is. A 90 and a piece of pipe. For indoors were you don't have deal with leaves. And want to remove that scum crust layer on top of the water, this would do it!
utility sink skimmer by Karl Schoeler
a good step by step guide with pictures and details. One of the oringal lets see what we can find laying around the house and make something with. Take a reading you may get some idea's of your own from this one!
Savio skimmer mod for larger basket by Kent Wallace
guessing he had some problems with leafs, because he wanted a bigger leaf catching basket. So kent did a little modding, and then gave a good step by step guide as usual for this mod.
modding a normally skimmer for gravity flow of water by schildkoi
title says it all (( in one of the pictures the black thing = a fernco fitting ))
      diy skimmer by www.waterbugdesign.com
different approach in how to create a leaf basket for a skimmer than other skimmers. Would be intresting to see like leaf basket put into a modified settling chamber. So one could run a few gravity flow skimmers to same filter.

not much to it. But the thread goes into details of possibly making a DIY rotating camera mount, that may be of some intrest, to ya tinkers out there!
      DIY muck mop by www.waterbugdesign.com
good details and info and pictures. Not a fan of the idea, of just using a filter sock to capture gunk. For a lot of stuff will still get back into the pond water, and may cause some problems for fish that are still in the water. By means of stirring up the muck on bottom of pond. and due to this would recommend removing all fish before using this device. and checking and if needed treating water before putting fish back into the water. for a watergarden with no fish in it. this would be a nice device!
      DIY silt vac by www.waterbugdesign.com
has direct requirements for a certain type of trash pump. But one could prolly easly use a couple connections between inlet pump and outlet of in-line leaf trap, to allow other pumps to be used. With that would suggest to use a trash pump for this setup ((a pump that can handle solids)) and not a normal every day pond pump.
predator protection for her wet pets by faith65
wealth of info and pictures. For those that have 3 feet plus deep ponds I think this would be abit of a waste. But for those that do end up with those shallow ponds. This might a nice product, more so if ya dealing with some nasty predoters.

looks like one hug sheet of bubble wrap or something like it. He goes into details about long slits being cut, so as to allow the koi if they ever to get on top, a way to exscape and get back into the water.

no detail or information, its pretty simply doing, that the pictures should be able to get across.

She has some great courage, no doubt for posting this info! It’s a good read for any person. Wanting to build a pond. While a picture may be worth a 1,000 words. This is one thread, that a single picture and the details ya just going to have to read, to find out the story behind it all. and what she went through.
what ya should not do. ( QT tank ) by sdgeorge
one of those uth oh's, as you can see from pic, and the bowing of the plywood, and the seperation at the corners. Id be one scarried puppy day in and day out, as I wonder if it is still holding water, and I didn't have a blow out. Not much details or anything, the pictures should be enough to get ya to start asking questions.

no direct disaster picks, but just another one of them, uth ohs. As wet muddy side walls give way.
