I'd make a list of the kind and quality of fish I wanted, and start at the top. I like raising fish, so I'd get a tosai and take it from there. However, if I found an asagi as nice as Birdman's (though I think he sold it) I'd buy it. High quality American is fine. I'm not sure a 90 cm fish would look good in my pond.

      Quality for the money,...

If we're talking bang for the buck it really would be hard to beat American Koi. Just one example - this group of US bred Koi represents:

      Adult Champion
      Bob Spindola Tategoi Award
      AKCA Judge's Award
      Best In Variety - Showa
      Best In Variety - Sanke
      Young Grand Champion
      Baby Grand Champion

ALL of these Koi combined would cost the buyer $2220. at the time they were sold from breeder to hobbyist. The hobbyists took these fine Koi on to award winning status with their excellent care and skills.

      Best Wishes,
      Brady Brandwood

If by breeder, Brady means Brady, he's got my money. I know where my next fish is coming from.

I'd say a little of both. Here's what I got from Brady with plenty of change left over from my $2500

      Why are you buying Koi???
That is the first question you need to answer... HONESTLY.
If you are purchasing for your own enjoyment AND you have the pond/filter combo to handle it, I would go 100% Domestic Koi, Nissai or older, from Brett, Brady, Matt, and Richard. As many as the $2500 and your pond can handle well.
If you are wanting to show I'd follow Dick B's advice and get one Import and 2 good Domestics from any of those breeders. TELL THEM you want true tategoi for future show purposes right up front and trust them to hook you up. They are honest and have reputations to back it up.

      $2500?
      Hmmmmmmmmmmm

1st, I'd set aside a little gas money. Then I'd grab a bowl & koi net & make road trip.

I'd plan my arrival at about 3am. Go into Stephen's pond & bowl me one of those monster Kuhaku's. He has lots of beauts & would never miss one.

Then I would take what's left & spend it on the 32 Hot Rod.

You could do what Walmart does and buy 7000 (thousand) for $2500 and resell them for $14.99 and buy a new house trailer.

You have 2 of our domestic breeder/members living not too far from you, and several good importers in the bay area to choose from. PSKoi is in Martinez along with several in SJ and SF. West Coast Koi and San Joaquin Koi are both close enough to keep shipping cost down on domestics. Take a look in the traders forum and you might be surprised at what you see for the money.
