      fish hanging out at surface....

a little over a week ago we bought all of our 11 fish at once from the same tank. first fish to ever go into the pond. ammonia 0 nitrite 0 gh and kh good
2000 gal pond with just the 11 4-5 in fish.
yesterday i didn't see "bones" all day and i was looking for him really well this morning during feeding and didn't see him either. so later in the morning i did see him kind of hanging at the surface. not tail up or down in good position but just still. he was moving fins and such but not swimming at all. when i would walk over he would swim off right away. he has been isolated from the other fish all day and i haven't seen him eat with the others either. a little while ago he was still at the surface just kind of riding the water.(hope you know what i mean) this time he didn't swim away he went to the bottom of the shallow part and i couldv'e picked him right up if i had wanted to.
now what could be the problem. is he just young and he has something wrong or could it be something else...what...
we intentionally got all the fish at once so we wouldn't have problems with parasites and such. what should i do. thanks for any advice.

somehow i knew you were going to say that . we haven't gotten a scope yet it is something we want and we were going to get one like at walmart but one of the threads here said they were junk.
i can't afford 150 dollar one right now so would a junk one work for now or do they not work at all.
until i get a scrape done is there anything else i can do.
      thanks

If those 11 ever get big you'll already be overstocked so make these not only the first, but the last, purchases.
Call the vendor up and tell them whats going on.
Get a name ( Hopefully the owner ?)
Report to them daily and if mortalities occur take the fish over and hand it to them.

      I wouldn't treat with anything.
Ride the wave...Whoever lives.... lives and the others , who may, or may not, get a refund/replacement fish.
A refund may be a better option.
4-5 inch fish this time of year are likely China, Singapore, Malasia, Vietnam...possibly low end domestic southern USA.... so i'd guess you payed $2-10 $ a piece for them ( I hope)
      Start saving for a microscope.
That should be the first purchase....before buying any fish.

I say this all of the time but two GOOD Koi are far better than 20 jun...errrrr....not so good Koi.

Welcome to Koiland...It's allot of fun once you get past the marketing scams.

i don't pretend to know everything or much about this hobby but we did buy these fish because we wanted pets and we knew we were going to enlarge the pond again in the next couple of years.
the koi i bought are japanese koi this time. i bought the so called junk koi(which i think is offensive as some are in this for pleasure not all the show stuff) last year and we enjoyed them so decided to figure out which ones we liked best. the 11 we bought i'm sure aren't the best of the best as i don't know everything to look for yet but we liked them and i think that is what matters.i did post pics of my fish because koiingaround asked me to under the fish pic thread gotta love the shiros if you want to take a look.
blammo you may think they are crappy japanese fish but we really like them. we have already named them and have become attached to them.
blammo i think you give good advice but sometimes you come across condenscending. these fish are the last that is why we bought them all at the same time together. the owners are friends of ours so i know they will make good and they cost more than 2-10 a piece.
thank you for the time you took to write to me blammo....i already knew i would need a microscope and were planning on getting one.

BC if you are friendswth the dealer than please get them to help you. They should have a micorscope to either lend you or you can take a LIVE fish to them to be scraped and scoped. They may also have an outbreak and know wat it is.

Have you netted the fish? Is it in Q now?

no i haven't netted it yet. i was going to this morning and when i went to get the net and bucket he had swum away and i haven't seen him again. thanks i will call them and see if they have any problems.
      bc
i will also keep a lookout for him to return to the top or at least closer to the sides. i guess it may be a good sign he isn't hanging at the top or could be a bad sign he has gone down to the bottom.

Not trying to be offensive , amigo.
My typing often rubs folks that way....
You can get "quality fish", from a top breeder and bloodline, without the cashola required for show stuff.
4-5 inch Japanese fish would have been spawned in Oct-Nov-Dec or January.

Certainly not in Niigata, I wouldn't imagine.

Your "friends" should be there any moment to help you, (I certaily would have, already) with this issue so I won't post this thread any more...
Good luck to you and yours.

sorry blammo if i read you the wrong way and if i came across nasty as well.
you just hurt my feelings i guess we are trying to get good fish this year and keep them alive and enjoy them. so i guess you just hit a sore spot.
again i appoligize i don't usually post in a nasty way.
thank you for your help and i know what you said about the microscope and overstocking in the future is true. we have just been putting money into all the filtration stuff and thought we would have alittle time to get the microscope. we hoped since they all came together they would be good...but i was wrong about that.
anyway thank you and i'm sorry!

Fish hanging about near the surface.

      Hi bcforsythe

Urgent attention I believe. . does your fish apear to be swimming of gently floating near the surface, . I have just lost one of my large koi due to a problem called Gill Flukes. Due to my introducing all of my fish to their newly built pond , I wrongly assumed that this particular fish was just a little stressed.

Due to my fish being in a holding pool for three weeks ( 10ft round by 2ft 6 in deep, not realy deep enough for the size of my fish) and due to the warm weather we had last week, a number of my fish started flashing and jumping out of the pool. A sure sign of parasites. . I dosed them all in a salt bath before placing them in the new pond, and all seemed fine.

It was over a couple of days I noticed one of the fish kept to himself, was not eating, and I can ony describe as floating around the top of the pond, rather than swimming. My concern increased, so out came my books but by the time I had found that there was a problem, and purchased the required treatment it was too late . I have now dosed the whole pond to be on the safe side.

So best check for Gill Flukes

he is gone and now my attention turns to my other koi. i need to act faster than i can get a microscope.
      merlin
that is exactly how my fish acted. one day fine and then at the surface not eating and not caring. how did you figure out gill flukes.
when i finally got him out this morning he had some white fuzzy stuff on his mouth and fins his coloration had diminished as well(kind of washed out looking)
i don't know... is there a shotgun treatment i can do. i have .1 salt in pond and other fish are fine i think for now. i will pay close attention to them tomorrow but i don't want to let another get that bad.
what should i do to help the others.
thanks for any help this is very frustrating and sad!

      Hi bcforcythe

I checked up on fish ailments in a book I have on water gardening, the symtoms matched exactley. I confirmed it with my local fish stockist, and it was sugested that I dose the fish and the pond with a medication called Bacterad, made by NT labs, it covers Finrot/Flukes and Ulcers. I dosed the pond on Tuesday and up untill now no problems with the other fish. Unfortunatley I was too late to save the Koi that passed on due to the problem being to far advanced.

The paleness around the gills was another sign that I originaly missed, they should have been reddy pink in coulour.

Hope all is well with the rest of your pond.

we went to the dealer this morning and he is having a a problem with a couple of his fish. he is using chloramine to treat his fish so he gave us some to use as well and told us to salt to .3. he said he was going to scope some of his later and i could call and find out what he found. he had us dose 1/4 of dose so we used 3Tablespoons for 2000 gallons.

we had a severe temp drop last night about 12degrees inthe water. so fish aren't very active this morning. so i will watch and see. we have added extra air and the pond is clear as can be no more algae. they don't seem to want to eat so not sure if that is due to colder water or what. it went from 68 to 56 this morning. so just watching and waiting.
      thanks
