      Transporting fish long distance

If I were gonna transport fish long distance (ie 7-9 hours) what would be the best way to package? How do you oxygenate them? Do you rent a tank from an oygen place and pump it into bags or what? I watched the bagging tutorial and oxygen is my main question. Any other advice for a first time transporter?

This is what I usually do: I put the water in the bag...and triple bag. I put in some ammo lock with aloe type of stuff (many brands available). I put the fish in...then oxygen...and rubberbands. Lots of them. I don't like cardboard boxes...they dont help if the bag breaks!!! I use hard plastic containers that you can buy at walmart or target. If it's hot outside...I put a piece of styrofoam on the top or side and then a cold pack from the freezer. Better not to put a cold pack directly on the bag. Once it's all in the plastic container...put the cover on and good to go!!!

Oh...when the fish arrives at it's destination: Place the bags in the new tank (and keep them closed!!!). Wait 30-60mins for the temperature to equalize. Open the bag...net the fish..and right in. discard the old water. Do not open the bag until you are ready to put the fish in the new tank...it will alter the ph if the CO2 is released.

The ammo-lock will keep the ammonia from the fish under control. Try not to feed them for 5 days before the trip...the water will stay better. My oxygen tank has a long hose. I put the hose in the bags opening, and into the water....release the air that is in the bag, and collapse the bag down somewhat. Then turn on the hose, filling the bag slowly with the tanks oxygen. That's what I do.

Why don't they make mouse flavored cat food?
45ACP; don't leave home without it.

are you wanting ideas for Carries koi?
is it still on the weekend of the Louisville show?
i agree about using something like a cooler(remember bringing it down full of beer) or rubbermaid storage totes,so just in case the bags leak there is still protection.
so if it is during louisville ,i am sure you will get alot of help with just a pretty smile and a please.

I am hoping so. We have ran into some snags but we are still trying to work something out. I am searching a couple possibilities.

Bill, I have used the Bag Buddies a couple of times
when moving large numbers of fry. I think they helped a lot
with so many of them little boogers in one bag.

Anyone have any experience with battery operated aerators? Would they work for this situation? For example if we had them in say, rubbermaid containers could we just use the battery operated aerator instead of bagging, and boxing with oxygen or would it be better to do the standard way? Just curious. We bought a battery operated aerator for emergencies for the basement in case of power outage. Figured some aeration was better than nothing. Just wondering if this would work for transporting?

when we go we take a car converter that plugs in cig.lighter and then a regular aquaruim aerater along.that way we know the battery is good.i have done the rubbermaid container way before.as always place box across the width of the vehicle to help the bumping of tail or nose.

use a A/c converter that plugs into your ash tray, run an extension cord to the back and plug in your aeration pump. I used this set up in the bed of my truck with 17 fish in my wifes Christmas rubbermaid boxes. I got all my fish home with noooo problems
