      Potting soil for water lily?

For water lilies I like to use real soil but most commercial potting mixes contain peat and other things that can turn your water brownish. I find that without a lot of fertalization the commercial 'aquatic' potting mixes that are just crushed terra cotta don't work all that well for lilies although they seem great for marginals. A while back on some web site that sold pond plants I found some potting soil for water lilies and I really liked it, I used it all and wanted to order more but of course now I can't find the site. It was kind of sandy and really dark and didn't color the water at all. I think it was called "just right soil" for Water lilies. Does anybody have a source or even a 'recipe' for a good water lily potting soil? Thanks.

I think that a lot of people have gone to using the coconut fiber. Just wrap up your lily and fertilizer tab, weight it down in the pot and place it back in the water. That's my plan. When I get to it.

Here's what I use, 1/3-1/2 part clay soil, the rest sand, prefereably lava sand, but any sand works. I mix in a decent amount of osmocote type time release fertilizer and when planting, I add 3 large time release tablets (agriform) near the base of the pot.

I use bagged topsoil. You do have to be careful of the brand you buy as it is not all the same. I buy mine at Home Depot and it is plain dirt and more clay based than most. It does not have very much debris in it at all. I mix some sand with it and it works very well for my lilies.
I did buy a bag of topsoil at Lowes some time back and that was a mistake. It was pitch black soil and was very loamy in texture. It made a mess, colored the water and I had to redo those plants. So you just have to be careful about what kind of topsoil you use.
I've never heard of the soil that you are looking for.

I use plain old clay garden soil and add a Jobe's Rose spike broken into 3rds or 4ths. I also line the pots with old polyester material before adding the soil, then cover the soil with an inch or two of gravel and pebbles.
