      Plants/Trees poisonous to Fish. Questions:

      Hi,

I wanted to plant some evergreens, small ones (schrubs and trees), close enough to my pond. I would never use a fir, pine, laurel, rhododendron, or azalea, as these are either toxic or grow too large eventually and will fill the pond with needles.

      1. I was considering, since I live in the northeast the Sweet Bay Magnolia Tree ["Henry Hicks"; Magnolia virginiana var. virginiana]. Does any one know if Magnolia should be unhealthy should koi ingest seeds or flowers?

      2. Could someone recommend, as a border (to screen out the neighbor's property) an evergreen that is non-toxic and native to the north-eastern states?

      thanks,
      steven

I had deodora cedars hanging right into the little creek between my 2 ponds with no problems. I also had rhodies very close to the pond, azaleas, weeping cherries, japanese maples. Also had alder & cottonwood trees very close by too, these were naturally there, I didn't plant them. Plus a huge maple tree close by. I am in WA state, but I think you have these trees as well. I have bamboo and bottle brush around the pond. But the pecan leaves get in there anyway.

I have azaleas and I hope they are not toxic. They aren't large yet, but next year they will be over the pond.

I have a catalog somewhere that has a list - wisteria is among the poisonous ones on that list - but it leaves flowers in my pond every year - I can't get to it to kill it.
