      Anyone make a waterfall spillway?

Spillways are too expensive for me right now. Is there anything that can be used to make a spillway?

      Thank you.

I bet you could make one is you found a flat lipped, vertical sided waste bin. I should look for one the next time I'm at Target.

      Actually you could make two.

McCourt has a fifteen or twenty gallon preform with a built in spillway, available
from Lowes for $20.00. Work with at least a 950 gallon/hr pump.

      Hope this helps

Here's a picture of a spillway that I built. That's about 2500 gph water flow.

Where are you putting a spillway?

I was at a pet store, Pet Supplies Plus(I think), and they had some kind of pan that I thought would make a good spillway.

I'm sure there are alot of things you could use to make one with. Depends on how large you need it.

Meg's hubby made one out of wood and some kind of water proofing paint. Very pretty! I think you can find it in Meg's Pond construction thread. https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showth...&page=16&pp=10

When I made my spillway, I got the flagstone with both ends cut for about 10 bucks.

Thank you for all the wonderful pictures and suggestions.

My problem is that I don't have the setup to do a formal spillway. Right now I have a 3" PVC pipe coming from a DIY filter which runs down to the waterfall and just sits there on top of the rocks spilling out water of the rocks like a white elephant! I don't really have the setup for anything large or grand, just a small, obscure one.

I will look around Lowes and at storage boxes to see what I can come up with. Thank you again.

try some flat rocks on a level surface, then use black foam to seal around the edges. either that or buy an inexpensive ones for under $100.

2 options possible if you have enough liner is to make a little pool of water then let it trickle over the rocks that you spray foamed in or cut a few slits or alot of holes in the pipe and run it across the top of your waterfall and cover with rock or flagstone to make the pipe like a sandwich between to rocks.

I made one a few years back with some bluestone and a scrap liner, made a small waterfall pond with some rocks around the yard , installed the liner, and mortared the bluestone in place, worked fine for a couple of years, until I redid the pond.

find a pretty pot, urn, jar, whatever, just largish.
plumb your 3" pvc into the bottom at an angle put whatever it is on it's side and "pour it into the pond!
      bye-bye white elephant trunk

here is an example of it on a small scale...

How about those cement things that go at the bottom of your gutter downspouts?

I made mine out of cement. I made a mold out of wood and sprayed it with WD 40 and filled it up, molding the top to have curved sides. I didn't like the way the water came out- I wanted a smooth sheet of water, so I siliconed a strip of plexi across the lip. You can't even see it when the water is running!

Wow - wonderful ideas!!!! I love the gutter thing - I may have to try that this year. The pot/urn idea is great too. Well, all are great!

I notice most of the spillways in the above posts have at least a 1 foot drop to the water. Is there any rule of thumb to determine the height of the spillway from the pond surface?
      Thanks,
      LSST

for oxygenation of the water you want lots of teeny tiny bubbles, but how that relates to the height of the spill. I can't tell you.
more splash means more noise, but that does not nessisarly mean more air. I think a lot of folks like the sounds of the waterfalls and make hieght choises according to that

Wow, what great ideas and GORGEOUS ponds/waterfalls!!! Thank you very much for such great ideas. You think maybe a paint tray would work? With all your wonderful ideas and great pictures, my mind is working overtime!

      Thank you very much!!!

      paint tray could work.

gramps had a old round flower pot, that he sat on the side. with water coming in from the bottom of the pot. and it would flow out of the opening of the pot.

my attempt to make a noise generator out of an old window blind. back side is plexi glass. could use plywood and a liner to protect plywood

a flat sheet of water from last peice on window blind to water in tank. a flat sheet of water makes a world of difference in a soothing sound. compared to a garggling driping sound as water ran off of the contraption into the pond. the splashing sound came up above and kept the driping noise to a minimal

      -----------
a flat sheet of water falling directly down into a pond will create more water turn over. than a bunch of water just splashing on the surface of a pond.

a good example might be a garden hose and spraying down in a 5 gallon bucket full of water. drop your hand down into bottom of bucket.

and then turn garden nozzel on spray and spray into 5 gallon bucket. you will feel hardly any water movement at bottom of bucket. ((this would be like water splashing on top of the pond water))

set garden hose nozzel for single stream of water and now spray into bucket. most likely you will feel the water moving. ((this would be like a flat shee of water coming off the waterfall.))

gas exchange = more with the flat sheet of water. because the water from the waterfall. will go towards the bottom of the pond. causing the water at bottom of pond to go to top of pond surface. which all in turns causes more water to be near air were it can allow gas exchange.

a higher waterfall with a flat sheet of water hitting top of pond water surface will simply create more water current. which in turns causes more gas exchange in a simplifed idea.

Too high and whenever the wind blows, you lose a heck of a lot of water!
