Doing the calculations the pond should be 550 gallons, which I know is small .I think I'm going to install the bypass and uv and have one less pump to run and one less cord to manage.

While I love sand and gravel filters , a 55 gallon S&G filter might be over kill for Your tiny pond.
If You have room in either the skimmer or waterfall filter for more media, or if it's possible to change to a better media,
Pics of each filter with the current media inside will help to see if it can be improved.

No need for 'flushing' from current... you just want the ability to remove any large debris that gets stuck under the grating and can do that via gravity.

The up and over route really just gives you the ability to avoid using a check valve to prevent back flowing the filter to the pump and potentially back to the pond. Just drill
a 3/8" hole in the pipe feeding to the bottom of the filter from the pump so when the power to the pump is shut off, the hole will break the suction from the barrel
back to the pump and pond. The red arrow shows the small hole drilled in the input pipe that spills a bit of water in the top of the filter when under pressure:
If the bleed hole you drill is under water will it still work once the water level has gone below the hole? I ask because instead of going up and over if i just went through the side
i would be able to put the lid back on the filter for winter snow.

Absolutely. It may back flow (siphon) some water but once it reaches the hole it'll break the siphon. To be safe I'd check
it every once in awhile and make sure algae hasn't plugged the hole if it's underwater, but it should work fine.

Definitely. It will actually do a better job of "polishing the water" at a slower flow.

      Thumbs up

      Hi Kent,
I currently use a 55gal barrel and filter pads for my 1200gal goldfish pond. I watched a lot of YouTube on these gravel filters and seems to be the way to go, be no one shows you how to make it.

But then I can across this post. I want base my new filter off of yours, but my output will go into PVC that runs back to my pond. (My pond is beside my garage and my filter sets on blocks in my garage)

      My current set up

I did have a few questions. They me be obvious to most, but i do not want to venture down this path and not have my plans in order.

      1. Are there any trays/dividers between the grades of gravel?
      - If not, do the different levels mix together when pumping air up through for cleaning?

      2. Have you ever or do you ever foresee having to take the gravel out for a thorough cleaning every so often?

      3. The Inlet Pipe, could the inlet come in at the side of the barrel at the bottom rather the top? That way, that PVC run can be eliminated and just the air pipe is running up through the gravel.

      4. After running your setup, are there any changes/recommendations you would make for someone using your guide?

      5. Could uniseal's be used instead of bulkheads?

I like the paint color you painted the barrels... how do you make the color looks like sand? matched perfect with the sand and rocks... do they sell that color in the can?

I assume there is a SC before this filter? or the pump pumped directly from the pond into this filter?

      Thanks,
They have rock spray paint with texture and everything
