Doing the calculations the pond should be 550 gallons, which I know is small .I think I'm going to install the bypass and uv and have one less pump to run and one less cord to manage.

While I love sand and gravel filters , a 55 gallon S&G filter might be over kill for Your tiny pond.
If You have room in either the skimmer or waterfall filter for more media, or if it's possible to change to a better media,
Pics of each filter with the current media inside will help to see if it can be improved.
so i understand thier is a 2000 or so GPH speed limit but is it ok to undrive it with say 1500gph
Hi Kent,
I currently use a 55gal barrel and filter pads for my 1200gal goldfish pond. I watched a lot of YouTube on these gravel filters and seems to be the way to go, be no one shows you how to make it.
But then I can across this post. I want base my new filter off of yours, but my output will go into PVC that runs back to my pond. (My pond is beside my garage and my filter sets on blocks in my garage)
My current set up
I did have a few questions. They me be obvious to most, but i do not want to venture down this path and not have my plans in order.
1. Are there any trays/dividers between the grades of gravel?
- If not, do the different levels mix together when pumping air up through for cleaning?
2. Have you ever or do you ever foresee having to take the gravel out for a thorough cleaning every so often?
3. The Inlet Pipe, could the inlet come in at the side of the barrel at the bottom rather the top? That way, that PVC run can be eliminated and just the air pipe is running up through the gravel.
4. After running your setup, are there any changes/recommendations you would make for someone using your guide?
5. Could uniseal's be used instead of bulkheads?
