RACCOONS -- How to ward off?

Hi All--The other night, we awoke to that irritating screeching (no, not the kid next door practicing his heavy metal guitar) and found THREE marauding raccoons at the pond. Two were standing on a waterfall and one was at pond's edge. Are there proven methods for warding off raccoons and possibly also skunks? We've had major damage in the past ... Thanks! ~ Noonie

I haven't found anything yet. I've heard if you string an electric dog fence around the pond it will stop them but then you have to worry about forgetting it's there and shocking yourself or the kids.

      Stringing fishing line doesn't work.

The water spritzer on this site looks interesting.

      Electric dog fences work great.

Skunks, however, when they hit it usually
      have an olfactory response...

And thirteen year old boys consider it a test
of macho to run up and grab it.

The only problem with shooting them is they're usually next to the pond and they don't come until about 2:00 a.m.

I have shot a few back in the day when I had my geese and chickens. I remember one was stretched from the ground to the top of the chain link fence trying to climb over when I got him. He was huge.

I use the catch and release method. I also have given them to my neighbors handyman. He raises them. My trap was the only thing that helped me.

      With a chaser?
Here's a direct quote from the Web site GMan recommended:
"Remember raccoons are really smart and very tricky. Review the products listed on the left and good luck because you will probably need some luck."

Yes Sandy, they sell bottled Coyote Urine and/or Fox Urine. I believe it even comes POWDER form!

Never tried it though because we have enough of them around.

This is getting alittle OT but yes those darn critters are SMART. We even had to start putting those bungie type cords on our trash cans and in no time the racoons learned how to get the straps off!

In my experience no ONE defense is the answer. I often recommend a series of obstacles that in combination usually works. If there was ONE product out there that did the job, there wouldn't be so many inventive choices

I LOVE my motion detection Scarecrow!! It solved many problems with herons and coons. The trick with using them is to have a couple of them spread apart for herons. Herons move slowly so can sometimes "fool" the Scarecrow so if you use two (or more) you've got it covered pretty well. At least that worked for us.

I also have coons. A WHOLE family living right at the rear of our property in a large hollow in a big oak tree. Every once and a while, late at night, you can see them all in a line walking across the backyard, but since we placed the scarecrows to monitor the ponds, their path of travel is FAR FAR away from the ponds. My guess is, they learned

We also net the ponds, but any well respecting coon would simply rip that up in no time, but it does slow them down long enough to get a good dousing of water from the sprinkler.

Good luck Noonie!! The wildlife is very hard to deal with sometimes and I don't think there is a hard and fast protection out there. At least I haven't seen one that I would use. I'd be nervous about anything electrical around the pond for fear of either hurting myself, our dogs or stray electricity harming the fish.

The electric fence can be quite effective but not very attractive. They can be set on a timer so that they are only on overnight. No plants can be touching the wires or the wire would be grounded at that point.

I had to put up an electric fence before I got rid of them. Not an easy feat with my high stucco walls in the courtyard. I also have a deck upstairs that allowed access, but is now blocked off with chicken wire.
